Managing allocation of half good blocks

A method comprising:

• generating a free block pool that includes a plurality of full blocks and a plurality of partial good blocks (PGBs) of a set of memory components, a size of a full block in the plurality of full blocks corresponding to a combination of two or more PGBs of the plurality of PGBs, each PGB of the plurality of PGBs comprising one or more defective word line groups (WGRs), and an individual PGB being included as part of the plurality of PGBs based on a determination that a quantity of the one or more defective WGRs in the individual PGB relative to a total quantity of WGRs in the individual PGB is below a reference threshold value;
• obtaining a maximum erase count value, an erase count associated with a previously used PGB comprising the individual PGB being computed as a sum of the maximum erase count value and a current erase count value of the previously used PGB;
• receiving a request to write data;
• determining whether the request to write data has been received from a host device or a controller of a memory sub-system;
• and
• allocating an individual full block from the plurality of full blocks or the individual PGB from the plurality of PGBs based on whether the request to write the data has been received from the host device or the controller of the memory sub-system.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising:

• generating a free block pool that includes a plurality of full blocks and a plurality of partial good blocks (PGBs) of a set of memory components, a size of a full block in the plurality of full blocks corresponding to a combination of two or more PGBs of the plurality of PGBs, each PGB of the plurality of PGBs comprising one or more defective word line groups (WGRs), and an individual PGB being included as part of the plurality of PGBs based on a determination that a quantity of the one or more defective WGRs in the individual PGB relative to a total quantity of WGRs in the individual PGB is below a reference threshold value;
• obtaining a maximum erase count value, an erase count associated with a previously used PGB comprising the individual PGB being computed as a sum of the maximum erase count value and a current erase count value of the previously used PGB;
• receiving a request to write data;
• determining whether the request to write data has been received from a host device or a controller of a memory sub-system;
• and
• allocating an individual full block from the plurality of full blocks or the individual PGB from the plurality of PGBs based on whether the request to write the data has been received from the host device or the controller of the memory sub-system.
