Abstract
A component for an electronic device including an internal compressive stress region is disclosed herein. The internal compressive stress region may be created in a glass portion of the component or in a glass ceramic portion of the component. Electronic devices comprising the components and method for making the components are also disclosed.
Claims19
An electronic device comprising:
- a display;
- a housing at least partially surrounding the display;
- and
- a cover member coupled to the housing and defining a front surface and a rear surface, opposite the front surface, the cover member comprising:
- a front portion formed from a first glass material and defining the front surface of the cover member, the front portion comprising:
- a front compressive stress region extending from the front surface of the cover member;
- and
- a first tensile stress region;
- a rear portion formed from a second glass material and defining the rear surface of the cover member, the rear portion comprising:
- a rear compressive stress region extending from the rear surface of the cover member;
- and
- a second tensile stress region;
- and
- a middle portion positioned between the front portion and the rear portion, the middle portion comprising a glass ceramic material and having an internal compressive stress region, the middle portion having a greater volume percentage of a crystalline phase than the front and the rear portions, the first tensile stress region positioned between the front compressive stress region and the internal compressive stress region of the middle portion, and the second tensile stress region positioned between the rear compressive stress region and the internal compressive stress region of the middle portion.

An electronic device comprising:
- an enclosure including an enclosure component comprising:
- a first glass portion defining an exterior surface of the enclosure component and comprising:
- a first compressive stress region extending from the exterior surface to a first depth;
- and
- a first tensile stress region;
- a second glass portion defining an interior surface of the enclosure component and comprising:
- a second compressive stress region extending from the interior surface to a second depth;
- and
- a second tensile stress region;
- and
- a glass ceramic portion positioned between the first glass portion and the second glass portion and comprising a third compressive stress region positioned between the first tensile stress region and the second tensile stress region, the glass ceramic portion having a greater volume percentage of a crystalline phase than each of the first glass portion and the second glass portion;
- and
- a sensor positioned within the enclosure and underneath the enclosure component.

An electronic device comprising:
- a housing;
- and
- a cover member coupled to the housing and comprising:
- a first portion formed from a glass material, defining an exterior surface of the cover member, and comprising:
- a first ion-exchanged layer extending from the exterior surface to a first depth that is less than a thickness of the first portion, the first ion-exchanged layer comprising a first compressive stress region;
- and
- a first tensile stress region positioned inward from the first compressive stress region;
- a second portion formed from the glass material, defining an interior surface of the cover member, and comprising:
- a second ion-exchanged layer extending from the interior surface to a second depth that is less than a thickness of the second portion, the second ion-exchanged layer comprising a second compressive stress region;
- and
- a second tensile stress region positioned inward from the second compressive stress region;
- and
- a third portion formed from a glass ceramic material, positioned between the first and the second portions, and comprising a third compressive stress region, the third portion having a greater volume percentage of crystals than each of the first portion or the second portion.
