Abstract
An adhesive patch is secured to an infusion set, patch pump or other on-body medical device by an overmolding process during manufacture of the medical device, or during manufacture of a portion of the medical device, without the need for a separate adhesive. This provides a more secure connection between the patch and the medical device, and reduces the required number of adhesive layers from two (skin attachment side and device attachment side) to one (skin attachment side only), thereby simplifying the design and manufacture of the patch.
Claims15
An on-body medical device comprising:
- a molded plastic base having a cannula for delivering said liquid medicament into the skin;
- a flexible fibrous, textured, perforated or porous patch having a skin-contacting adhesive on one side and an opposite side overmolded with said base, whereby said base permeates or impregnates said flexible, textured, perforated or porous patch by molding said base onto said flexible, textured, perforated or porous patch;
- and
- a release liner covering said skin-contacting adhesive, said release liner having a first liner hole aligned with a first patch hole in said flexible fibrous, textured, perforated or porous patch, and through which said cannula extends, said release liner having a second liner hole aligned with a second patch hole in said flexible fibrous, textured, perforated or porous patch, said second liner hole and said second patch hole being configured to receive plastic material therethrough to permeate or impregnate said flexible, textured, perforated or porous patch and mold said base onto said flexible, textured, perforated or porous patch;
- wherein said base partially blocks said aligned second liner hole and second patch hole.
An on-body medical device comprising:
- a molded plastic base comprising a rigid inner hub and a flexible outer disc molded onto said rigid inner hub, said rigid inner hub having a fluid connector and a cannula;
- an adhesive patch coupled to said molded plastic base by molten plastic material of said flexible outer disc that impregnates or permeates said adhesive patch and forms said flexible outer disc to couple said rigid inner hub and flexible outer disc to each other and said adhesive patch, and where said adhesive patch is fibrous, textured, perforated or porous;
- and
- a release liner covering an adhesive on said adhesive patch, said adhesive patch and said release liner having a first set of aligned holes through which said cannula extends, and a second set of aligned holes configured to receive injected plastic material through said second set of aligned holes and said adhesive patch to form said flexible disc and impregnate or permeate said adhesive patch.
An on-body medical device comprising:
- a molded plastic base;
- and
- a flexible fibrous, textured, perforated or porous patch having a skin-contacting adhesive on one side and an opposite side overmolded with said base, whereby said base permeates or impregnates said flexible, textured, perforated or porous patch by molding said base onto said flexible, textured, perforated or porous patch;
- and
- a release liner covering said skin-contacting adhesive, said release liner having a liner hole aligned with a patch hole in said flexible fibrous, textured, perforated or porous patch, said liner hole and said patch hole receiving plastic material therethrough to permeate or impregnate said flexible, textured, perforated or porous patch and to form at least a portion of said base;
- wherein said base partially blocks said aligned liner hole and patch hole.
