Abstract
Systems and methods are described for treatment of neurological conditions in which transcranial illumination using infrared, near-infrared and/or red wavelengths of light are delivered into the brain of a patient using a portable head wearable device. Arrays of light emitters are simultaneously controlled to provide a selected power density and distribution during a therapeutic session to treat a condition of the patient. An external controller such as a touchscreen tablet or laptop computer can be used to select illumination parameters for each patient. The system can be used to provide treatment to children such as those having autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Claims32
A photobiomodulation neuro-therapy device comprising:
- a portable head mounted device that is sized to be positioned on a patient's head, the portable head mounted device including a plurality of light emitting devices mounted on a plurality of separated panels attached to a frame, a headworn memory and a battery providing power to the portable head mounted device, the plurality of light emitting devices operable in response to control signals to control emission of transcranial illuminating light into the patient having a near infrared wavelength delivered during a therapeutic period;
- a controller on the portable head mounted device, the controller being mounted on a controller circuit board attached to the frame and connected to each of the light emitting devices to execute instructions to communicate the control signals from the controller that individually controls emission of illuminating light from each of the light emitting devices during the therapeutic period wherein the light emitting devices emit illuminating pulses at a pulse rate and duty cycle;
- a portable display device having a processor, a graphical user interface, a display and a display device memory that stores a plurality of programmed software modules configured to control one or more operations of the portable head mounted device, the processor configured to execute the plurality software modules that control an operation of the portable head mounted device, the portable display device having a transceiver to wirelessly communicate the control signals to the portable head mounted device to control operation of the light emitting devices during the therapeutic period;
- and
- a wireless transceiver on the portable head mounted device that receives wireless signals from the portable display device that is programmed to transmit therapeutic parameters to the portable head mounted device that are recorded in the headworn memory.
A method for photobiomodulation therapy of a patient comprising:
- positioning a portable headworn device on a patient's head, the portable headworn device including a plurality of light emitting devices, a controller, a headworn memory and a battery providing power to the plurality of light emitting devices;
- transmitting transcranial illuminating light into the patient having a near infrared wavelength to deliver an optical flux during a therapeutic period wherein the controller executes instructions stored in the headworn memory to control the emission of light by one or more of the plurality of light emitting devices at a pulse rate and duty cycle during the therapeutic period;
- measuring at least one of an emitted optical flux and a temperature of at least one of the light emitting devices during the therapeutic period with a sensor on the portable headworn device;
- and
- storing a record of at least one of the emitted optical flux of illuminating light delivered to the patient and the temperature of the at least one light emitting device during the therapeutic period in the headworn memory.
