Abstract
A bioreactor includes a first compartment designed to retain seaweed sporophytes, a second compartment in fluid communication with the first compartment that includes one or more settlement surfaces, and a first porous barrier between the first and second compartments that allows the seaweed spores to pass from the first compartment to the second compartment, and systems comprising the bioreactor. Also provided herein are methods of culturing seaweed, for example, using a bioreactor provided herein.
Claims29
A system comprising:
- a bioreactor;
- a reservoir;
- one or more filters;
- one or more pumps;
- one or more settlement surfaces, the one or more settlement surfaces including one or more spools;
- an air blower capable of providing air to the bioreactor;
- and
- a controller that interfaces with the system and manages one or more conditions within the system,
- wherein the reservoir, the bioreactor, the one or more filters, and the one or more pumps are capable of being in fluid communication, and
- wherein the controller is configured to manage culturing A. taxiformis and A. armata by:
- exposing a culture of A. taxiformis or A. armata sporophytes to daily light;
- reducing hours of the daily light to which the sporophytes are exposed, thereby inducing sporogenesis from the sporophytes;
- and
- inducing spores resulting from the sporogenesis from the sporophytes to attach to the one or more settlement surfaces,
- thereby culturing the A. taxiformis or the A. armata.
