Abstract
A data processing apparatus is provided. It includes history storage circuitry that stores historic data of instructions and prediction circuitry that predicts a historic datum of a specific instruction based on subsets of the historic data of the instructions. The history storage circuitry overwrites the historic data of one of the instructions to form a corrupted historic datum and at least one of the subsets of the historic data of the instructions includes the corrupted historic datum.
Claims18
A data processing apparatus comprising:
- history storage circuitry configured to store historic data of instructions;
- wherein the historic data of the instructions comprises:
- margin entries associated with those of the instructions that are older than an oldest in-flight instruction, the margin entries being tracked to enable a rewind if the oldest in-flight instruction is mispredicted, and
- in-flight entries relating to those of the instructions that are in-flight;
- and
- prediction circuitry configured to predict a historic datum of a specific instruction based on a plurality of subsets of the historic data of the instructions, and responsive to a misprediction of at least one of the instructions to rewind the history storage circuitry;
- wherein
- the history storage circuitry is configured to form a corrupted entry of the historic data by overwriting at least one of the margin entries which would be used for rewinding the history storage circuitry in the event of a misprediction of the oldest in-flight instruction by the prediction circuitry based on the historic data tracked in the history storage circuitry;
- and
- at least one of the subsets of the historic data of the instructions includes the corrupted entry of the historic data.
A data processing method comprising:
- storing historic data of instructions;
- wherein the historic data of the instructions comprises:
- margin entries associated with those of the instructions that are older than an oldest in-flight instruction, the margin entries being tracked to enable a rewind upon a misprediction of the oldest in-flight instruction, and
- in-flight entries relating to those of the instructions that are in-flight;
- and
- predicting a historic datum of a specific instruction based on a plurality of subsets of the historic data of the instructions, wherein
- at least one of the margin entries, which would be used for rewinding in the event of a misprediction of the oldest in-flight instruction based on the historic data, is overwritten to form a corrupted entry of the historic data;
- and
- at least one of the subsets of the historic data of the instructions includes the corrupted entry of the historic data.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium to store computer-readable code for fabrication of a data processing apparatus comprising:
- history storage circuitry configured to store historic data of instructions;
- wherein the historic data of the instructions comprises:
- margin entries associated with those of the instructions that are older than an oldest in-flight instruction, the margin entries being tracked to enable a rewind upon a misprediction of the oldest in-flight instruction, and
- in-flight entries relating to those of the instructions that are in-flight;
- and
- prediction circuitry configured to predict a historic datum of a specific instruction based on a plurality of subsets of the historic data of the instructions, and responsive to a misprediction of at least one of the instructions to rewind the history storage circuitry;
- wherein
- the history storage circuitry is configured to form a corrupted entry of the historic data by overwriting at least one of the margin entries which would be used for rewinding the history storage circuitry in the event of a misprediction of the oldest in-flight instruction by the prediction circuitry based on the historic data tracked in the history storage circuitry;
- and
- at least one of the subsets of the historic data of the instructions includes the corrupted entry of the historic data.
