Abstract
An apparatus for reducing condensation on water lines has a sensor for measuring dew point of ambient air, a first inlet for receiving cold water, a second inlet for receiving hot water, and an outlet. Further, the apparatus has a manifold in fluid communication with the first inlet, the second inlet, and the outlet, a valve for controlling the flow of hot water from the second inlet into the manifold, and an actuator configured to adjust the valve. The apparatus has a controller coupled to the first sensor and the actuator for controlling the actuator to adjust a quantity of hot water that is mixed with cold water at the outlet based on one or more dew point measurements from the sensor.
Claims19
A system for reducing condensation on a water line of a building, the system comprising:
- a manifold defining:
- a first inlet configured to be connected to a cold water line of a building for receiving cold water from the cold water line;
- a second inlet configured to be connected to a hot water line of the building for receiving hot water from the hot water line;
- and
- an outlet configured to be connected to the cold water line of the building for providing water to the cold water line;
- and
- a body fluidly coupling the first inlet and the second inlet to the outlet;
- the manifold further including:
- a valve configured to control the flow of hot water through the manifold between the second inlet and the outlet;
- and
- an actuator configured to adjust the valve,
- wherein the manifold is a single unit that is configured to be connected to the first, second and third water lines;
- a first sensor configured to obtain measurements indicative of a dew point of ambient air;
- a second sensor configured to obtain measurements indicative of a temperature of water at the outlet;
- and
- a controller coupled to the first sensor and the actuator, the controller including one or more processing devices and a storage medium having instructions thereon, the instructions, when executed by the one or more processing devices, cause the one or more processing devices to control the actuator to adjust a quantity of hot water that is mixed with cold water in the manifold based on one or more measurements from the first sensor and one or more measurements from the second sensor.
A method of reducing condensation on a water line of a building, the method comprising:
- determining, using one or more processing devices and a storage medium having instructions thereon, a dew point of ambient air;
- receiving, at a first inlet, water from a cold water line of the building at a first temperature;
- converting power from a power source to heat;
- transferring the heat to the water;
- controlling the converting power to heat using the one or more processing devices executing instructions stored on the storage medium, to provide water at an outlet, to the cold water line of the building, at a second temperature according to a setpoint, wherein the setpoint is based on the dew point.
A water heating device for a water line of a building comprising:
- a first inlet configured to be connected to a cold water line of the building for receiving water at a first temperature from the cold water line of the building;
- an outlet configured to be connected to the cold water line of the building for providing water to the cold water line of the building;
- a heating device configured to convert power from a power source to heat and transfer the heat to water received at the first inlet and provide heated water at the outlet;
- a controller coupled to the heating device, the controller including one or more processing devices and a storage medium having instructions thereon where the instructions, when executed by the one or more processing devices, cause the one or more processing devices to control the heating device to adjust the amount of power converted to heat based on one or more dew point measurements received by the controller to provide heated water at a second temperature.
