Abstract
The disclosure provides a cross-linkable polymer composition, a core layer for an information carrying card comprising such cross-linked composition, resulting information carrying card, and methods of making the same. An information carrying card includes a body defining a first cavity and a second cavity. The first cavity has a first area and the second cavity has a second area. The first cavity is continuous with the second cavity and the second area is less than the first area. A circuit element is disposed within the first cavity.
Claims25
A method for forming a plurality of information cards comprising:
- applying a first thermoplastic layer having a first cavity;
- providing an inlay layer so as to be fully disposed in the first cavity, wherein the inlay layer comprising a piece of metal, a supporting film, and at least one active or passive electronic component embedded or surface-mounted on the supporting film, the supporting film defines a plurality of holes therein separate from the at least one an active or passive electronic component, and an instant adhesive is disposed inside the plurality of holes and contacting the first thermoplastic layer;
- applying a cross-linkable polymer composition to the first thermoplastic layer;
- positioning the inlay layer in a sandwich arrangement with the first thermoplastic layer and the cross-linkable polymer composition, wherein the inlay layer is in direct contact with the first thermoplastic layer and the cross-linkable polymer composition;
- applying a predetermined pressure to the layered structure;
- positioning a printable thermoplastic layer on a surface of the sandwich structure;
- and
- heating the sandwich structure to a temperature sufficient to at least partially cure the cross-linkable polymer composition into a crosslinked polymer composition so as to form one or more information cards.
A plurality of information cards, each comprising:
- a first thermoplastic layer having a first cavity;
- an inlay layer fully disposed in the first cavity, wherein the inlay layer comprising a piece of metal, a supporting film, and at least one active or passive electronic component embedded or surface-mounted on the supporting film, the supporting film defines a plurality of holes therein separate from the at least one active or passive electronic component, and an instant adhesive is disposed inside the plurality of holes and contacting the first thermoplastic layer;
- a crosslinked polymer composition contacting the first thermoplastic layer;
- wherein the inlay layer is arranged in a sandwich structure with the first thermoplastic layer and the crosslinked polymer composition, so that the inlay layer is in direct contact with the first thermoplastic layer and the crosslinked polymer composition;
- and
- a printable thermoplastic layer on a surface of the sandwich structure.
