Abstract
A method of producing composites that are capable of being used in various industries, including the aerospace and automotive industries. In particular, the present disclosure relates to methods of curing one or more prepregs and/or a liquid curable composition using one or more self-supporting, nonwoven carbon nanotube sheets comprising substantially non-aligned carbon nanotubes.
Claims10
A method of producing a composite laminate, comprising:
- (i) providing a curable system comprising:
- a stack of two or more prepregs, and
- one or more carbon nanotube sheets, wherein at least one of the carbon nanotube sheets is placed in-between the two or more prepregs and wherein the carbon nanotube sheet is a self-supporting, nonwoven sheet of substantially non-aligned carbon nanotubes, wherein substantially non-aligned means that the degree of vertical alignment of the carbon nanotubes may be less than 30% alignment based on the total number of carbon nanotubes;
- two or more additives selected from a catalyst, a curing agent, an antioxidant, a toughening agent, and a fire retardant;
- and
- (ii) at least partially curing the curable system subjecting the curable system to alternating electromagnetic fields such that at least a portion of the prepregs are cured.
