Abstract
An apparatus and method provide a barrier in the cooling airflow of a component of a computing device that, when the barrier is extended, impedes the airflow, thereby diverting excess cooling airflow from the component to a different component with a different flow path. In response to increased pressure from the airflow, the barrier retracts to permit a greater airflow. Embodiments respond to an increase or decrease in airflow without requiring additional control input and include barriers that deform or pivot in response to increased pressure to permit greater airflow.
Claims7
A system comprising:
- a chassis having a bottom, a first lateral side wall and a second lateral side wall;
- a first heat-producing component provided within the chassis;
- a second heat-producing component provided within the chassis, wherein the second heat-producing component produces less heat than the first heat-producing component;
- a fan configured to provide a third airflow through the chassis, the third airflow being the sum of a first airflow to the first heat-producing component and a second airflow to the second heat-producing component;
- a divider provided within the chassis, the divider separating the first airflow to the first heat-producing component from the second airflow to the second heat-producing component;
- and
- an airflow-regulator provided only within the second airflow and extending between the divider and one of the first lateral side wall or the second lateral side wall, the airflow-regulator extending from the bottom of the chassis to a top of one of the first lateral side wall or second lateral side wall, such that only the second airflow flows through the airflow-regulator, the airflow-regulator including an opening enlarge and control flow in the direction of the second airflow as pressure exerted on the airflow-regulator by the second airflow increases, wherein the airflow regulator is deformed in response to exerted air pressure, independent of additional control input.
