Vehicle network address assignment

A method, comprising:

• at a first computer, transmitting, via a communication network, a first message including a first network address and a request to generate a random number;
• receiving a first reply message from a second computer including the random number in response to the request;
• assigning a second network address for the second computer based on the random number;
• transmitting, via the communication network, a second message including the second network address and the random number;
• transmitting, via the communication network, a third message including the second network address and a second request to confirm the second network address;
• receiving a second reply message from the second computer including the second network address in response to the third message;
• and
• upon receiving, via a short-range broadcast protocol, the second reply message, determining a location of the second computer based on at least one of an angle-of-arrival measurement, a signal strength measurement, or a time-of-flight measurement of the second reply message.

A system, comprising:

• a communication network;
• a first computer connected to the communication network and assigned a first network address on the communication network;
• and
• a second computer connected to the communication network and assigned the first network address on the communication network;
• wherein the first computer is programmed to:
• transmit, via the communication network, a first message including the first network address and a request to generate a random number;
• receive a first reply message from the second computer including the random number in response to the request;
• assign a second network address for the second computer based on the random number;
• transmit, via the communication network, a second message including the second network address and the random number;
• transmit, via the communication network, a third message including the second network address and a second request to confirm the second network address;
• receive a second reply message from the second computer including the second network address in response to the third message;
• and
• upon receiving, via the communication network, the second reply message, determine a location of the second computer based on an amount of time to receive the second reply message after sending the second request.

A method, comprising:

• at a first computer, transmitting, via a communication network, a first message including a first network address and a request to generate a random number;
• receiving a first reply message from a second computer including the random number in response to the request;
• assigning a second network address for the second computer based on the random number;
• transmitting, via the communication network, a second message including the second network address and the random number;
• transmitting, via the communication network, a third message including the second network address and a second request to confirm the second network address;
• receiving a second reply message from the second computer including the second network address in response to the third message;
• and
• upon receiving, via the communication network, the second reply message, determining a location of the second computer based on an amount of time to receive the second reply message after sending the second request.
