Configurable access to a reconfigurable processor by a virtual function

A data processing system, comprising:

• a communication link;
• a runtime processor that is operatively coupled to the communication link;
• and
• one or more reconfigurable processors, a reconfigurable processor of the one or more reconfigurable processors comprising:
• at least one array of coarse-grained reconfigurable units;
• and
• an interface to the communication link that is operatively coupled to the communication link, thereby coupling the reconfigurable processor to the runtime processor via the communication link, wherein the runtime processor is adapted for configuring the interface to the communication link to provide access to the at least one array of coarse-grained reconfigurable units through the communication link from a physical function driver and from at least one virtual function driver, wherein the physical function that is associated with the physical function driver has exclusive access to a first portion of the at least one array of coarse-grained reconfigurable units, and wherein the physical function shares access to a second portion of the at least one array of coarse-grained reconfigurable units that is different than the first portion with at least one virtual function that is associated with the at least one virtual function driver;
• wherein the runtime processor is adapted for configuring the interface to the communication link to provide access to the N arrays of coarse-grained reconfigurable units to the physical function and to up to N virtual functions,
• wherein N equals 4 and the runtime processor is adapted for configuring the interface to the communication link, based at least in part on a number of virtual functions to enable of the at least one virtual function and resource requirements of the at least one virtual function, to one of:
• a first configuration wherein up to four virtual functions of the at least one virtual function are enabled, each assigned a separate array of the four arrays of coarse-grained reconfigurable units,
• a second configuration wherein up to two virtual functions of the at least one virtual function are enabled, each assigned two adjacent arrays of the four arrays of coarse-grained reconfigurable units, and
• a third configuration wherein a single virtual function of the at least one virtual function is assigned the four arrays of coarse-grained reconfigurable units.
