Abstract
Monitoring systems and methods for providing haptic stimulation reflective alarm conditions are described. A data acquisition circuit interprets a plurality of detection values received from a plurality of sensors operatively coupled to an industrial environment. In response to at least one of the detection values, an analysis response circuit determines an alarm condition. A haptic device provides a haptic stimulation to a user in response to the alarm condition, where the form of the haptic stimulation varies based on a type of physical effect in the industrial environment.

A system for monitoring an industrial environment, the system comprising:
- a haptic device structured to provide at least one of multiple types of haptic stimulation to a user, wherein the haptic device is capable of delivering at least two of the multiple types of haptic stimulation to the user and wherein the multiple types of haptic stimulation are selected from a vibrational stimulation, a thermal stimulation, an electrical stimulation, a tactile simulation, a force stimulation, an odor stimulation, a motion stimulation, and an audible stimulation;
- and
- a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing computer executable instructions that, when executed, cause at least one processor to perform actions comprising:
- interpreting a plurality of detection values received from a plurality of sensors operatively coupled to the industrial environment;
- detecting an alarm condition in response to at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values;
- determining a type of physical effect in the industrial environment indicated by the alarm condition and at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values;
- selecting the at least one of the multiple types of haptic stimulation to be delivered to the user based on a similarity between the determined type of physical effect and the selected at least one of the multiple types of haptic stimulation;
- and
- instructing the haptic device to provide the selected at least one of the multiple types of haptic stimulation to the user in response to the alarm condition,
- wherein the selected at least one of the multiple types of haptic stimulation varies at least one of:
- a timing of the haptic stimulation, an intensity level of the haptic stimulation, or a duration of the haptic stimulation, based on at least one of:
- an intensity of, or a variation in, the physical effect in the industrial environment as indicated by the alarm condition and the at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values.
A system for monitoring an industrial environment, the system comprising:
- a data acquisition circuit structured to interpret a plurality of detection values received from a plurality of sensors operatively coupled to the industrial environment;
- an analysis response circuit structured to:
- determine an alarm condition in response to at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values;
- determine a type of physical effect in the industrial environment indicated by the alarm condition and at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values;
- and
- select at least one of multiple types of haptic stimulation to be delivered to a user based the determined type of physical effect;
- and
- a haptic device capable of delivering at least two of the multiple types of haptic stimulation to the user, wherein the multiple types of haptic stimulation are selected from a vibrational stimulation, a thermal stimulation, an electrical stimulation, a tactile simulation, a force stimulation, an odor stimulation, a motion stimulation, an audible stimulation, and a buzzing stimulation,
- wherein the haptic device is structured to provide the selected at least one of the multiple types of haptic stimulation to the user in response to the alarm condition, and
- wherein the selected haptic stimulation varies at least one of:
- a timing of the haptic stimulation, an intensity level of the haptic stimulation, or a duration of the haptic stimulation, based on at least one of an intensity of or a variation in the determined type of physical effect in the industrial environment as indicated by the alarm condition and at least one of the interpreted detection values.
A computer-implemented method for monitoring an industrial environment, the method comprising:
- interpreting, by a processor, a plurality of detection values received from a plurality of sensors operatively coupled to the industrial environment;
- detecting, by the processor, an alarm condition in response to at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values;
- determining a type of physical effect in the industrial environment indicated by the alarm condition and at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values;
- selecting at least one of multiple types of haptic stimulation to be delivered to a user based the determined type of physical effect;
- and
- instructing, by the processor, a haptic device to provide the selected at least one of multiple types of haptic stimulation to the user in response to the alarm condition,
- wherein the haptic device is capable of delivering at least two of the multiple types of haptic stimulation to the user, including the selected at least one of multiple types of haptic stimulation, and the multiple types of haptic stimulation are selected from a vibrational stimulation, a thermal stimulation, an electrical stimulation, a tactile simulation, a force stimulation, an odor stimulation, a motion stimulation, an audible stimulation, and a buzzing stimulation, and
- wherein the selected at least one of multiple types of haptic stimulation varies at least one of:
- a timing of the haptic stimulation, an intensity level of the haptic stimulation, or a duration of the haptic stimulation, based on at least one of an intensity of, or a variation in, the physical effect in the industrial environment as indicated by the alarm condition and the at least one of the interpreted plurality of detection values.
