Abstract

A method provides non-disruptive transition from a freeze frame video back to a live video feed from a first communication device connected via a server device to a video communication session with other participants. The method includes presenting, by the server device, a freeze frame video including an image of a participant with a background. The method includes receiving live video of a field of view of an image capturing device of the first communication device, and detecting a change in a visual characteristic of the live video that can present a visual distraction to other participants. The method includes, in response to detecting the change: modifying aspects of the live video to provide a modified live video that retains the visual characteristic consistent with the freeze frame video; and presenting the modified live video to the video communication session on transition from freeze frame video to live video.

Dependent claims

An electronic device comprising:

a communication subsystem that enables the electronic device to communicatively connect a first communication device and at least one second communication device via a video communication session;
a memory having stored thereon a video communication application and a freeze frame video (FFV) module with program code for selectively presenting, during the video communication session, a freeze frame video of a first participant associated with the first communication device;
and
at least one processor communicatively coupled to the communication subsystem and the memory, the at least one processor processing program instructions of the video communication application and the freeze frame video module and configured to cause the electronic device to:
present, via the video communication session, at least a first video comprising the first participant;
present, in response to a freeze frame video trigger associated with the first video, a freeze frame video comprising an image of the first participant with a first background that is presented during prior recording of the freeze frame video;
receive from the first communication device, while presenting the freeze frame video, live video of a field of view of an image capturing device of the first communication device, the live video comprising the first participant and a current background transmitted within the live video;
detect, based on a comparison of the live video with the freeze frame video, a change in at least one visual characteristic of the live video that can present a visual distraction to other participants of the video communication session while transitioning from presenting the freeze frame video to presenting the live video to the video communication session;
and
in response to detecting the change:
modify aspects of the live video to provide a modified live video that retains the at least one visual characteristic consistent with the freeze frame video;
and
present the modified live video to the video communication session on transition from the freeze frame video to the live video.

presenting, by at least one processor of an electronic device, at least a first video comprising a first participant to a video communication session involving a first communication device and at least one second communication device, both communicatively coupled to the electronic device;
presenting, in response to a freeze frame video trigger associated with the first video, a freeze frame video comprising an image of the first participant with a first background that is presented during prior recording of the freeze frame video;
receiving from the first communication device, while presenting the freeze frame video, live video of a field of view of an image capturing device of the first communication device, the live video comprising the first participant and a current background transmitted within the live video;

modifying aspects of the live video to provide a modified live video that retains the at least one visual characteristic consistent with the freeze frame video;
and
presenting the modified live video to the video communication session on transition from the freeze frame video to the live video.

A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium having program instructions that when executed by a processor of an electronic device connected to a video communication session configures the electronic device to perform functions comprising:

presenting, by at least one processor of an electronic device, at least a first video comprising a first participant to a video communication session involving a first communication device and at least one second communication device, both communicatively coupled to the electronic device;
presenting, in response to a freeze frame video trigger associated with the first video, a freeze frame video comprising an image of the first participant with a first background that is presented during prior recording of the freeze frame video;
receiving from the first communication device, while presenting the freeze frame video, live video of a field of view of an image capturing device of the first communication device, the live video comprising the first participant and a current background transmitted within the live video;
detecting, based on a comparison of the live video with the freeze frame video, a change in at least one visual characteristic of the live video that can present a visual distraction to other participants of the video communication session while transitioning from presenting the freeze frame video to presenting the live video to the video communication session;
and
in response to detecting the change:
modifying aspects of the live video to provide a modified live video that retains the at least one visual characteristic consistent with the freeze frame video;
and
presenting the modified live video to the video communication session on transition from the freeze frame video to the live video.
