Abstract
Examples described herein relate to a network interface device that includes circuitry to decide packet format of a packet including data to be transmitted based on network utilized to transmit the packet and circuitry to form the packet based on the decided packet format. In some examples, the network utilized to transmit the packet is based on an egress port of the packet. In some examples, the network utilized to transmit the packet comprises one or more of: direct interconnect, small scale-up network, or large scale-out network. In some examples, to decide packet format, the circuitry is to form the packet byte by byte to reduce overhead caused by preamble and number of header fields.
Claims20
An apparatus comprising:
- a network interface device comprising:
- a host interface;
- a direct memory access (DMA) circuitry;
- a network interface;
- circuitry to select a packet format, from among multiple packet formats, of a packet including data to be transmitted and to indicate a format of the packet and an extent of byte reductions in a header of the packet;
- and
- circuitry to form the packet based on the selected packet format, wherein:
- based on the selected packet format comprising a first packet format, the header comprises a first set of protocol compliant fields and
- based on the selected packet format comprising a second packet format, the header comprises a second set of protocol compliant fields and a size indicator field and wherein:
- a number of fields in the first set of protocol compliant fields is less than a number of fields in the second set of protocol compliant fields, and
- a size of a field in the first set of protocol compliant fields is smaller than a corresponding field in the second set of protocol compliant fields.
At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions stored thereon, that if executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
- configure a network interface device, comprising a host interface, a direct memory access (DMA) circuitry, and a network interface, to:
- select a packet format, from among multiple packet formats, of a packet including data to be transmitted to indicate a format of the packet and a level of byte reductions in a header of the packet;
- and
- form the packet based on the selected packet format, wherein:
- based on the selected packet format comprising a first packet format, the header comprises a first set of protocol compliant fields and
- based on the selected packet format comprising a second packet format, the header comprises a second set of protocol compliant fields and a size indicator field and wherein:
- a number of fields in the first set of protocol compliant fields is less than a number of fields in the second set of protocol compliant fields, and
- a size of a field in the first set of protocol compliant fields is smaller than a corresponding field in the second set of protocol compliant fields.
A method comprising:
- a network interface device, comprising a host interface, a direct memory access (DMA) circuitry, and a network interface, determining a packet format, from among multiple packet formats, of a packet including data to be transmitted to indicate a format of the packet and byte reductions in a header of the packet;
- and
- the network interface device forming the packet based on the determined packet format, wherein:
- based on the determined packet format comprising a first packet format, the header comprises a first set of protocol compliant fields and
- based on the determined packet format comprising a second packet format, the header comprises a second set of protocol compliant fields and a size indicator field and wherein:
- a number of fields in the first set of protocol compliant fields is less than a number of fields in the second set of protocol compliant fields, and
- a size of a field in the first set of protocol compliant fields is smaller than a corresponding field in the second set of protocol compliant fields.
