Abstract
A device (125) that may configure itself is disclosed. The device (125) may include an interface (305) that may be used for communications with a chassis (105). The interface (305) may support a plurality of transport protocols (330, 355, 345, 350). The device (125) may include a Vital Product Data (VPD) reading logic (310) to read a VPD (130) from the chassis (105) and a built-in self-configuration logic (315) to configure the interface (305) to use one of the transport protocols (330, 355, 345, 350) and to disable alternative transport protocols (330, 355, 345, 350), responsive to the VPD (130).
Claims13
A storage device, comprising:
- storage for data;
- an interface to a chassis, the interface supporting at least a first transport protocol and a second transport protocol for communicating between the storage device and the chassis, the interface including a Non-Volatile Memory Express over Fabric (NVMeoF) interface;
- a VPD reading logic to read a Vital Product Data from the chassis, the Vital Product Data including the first transport protocol intended to be used to communicate with the storage device;
- and
- a built-in self-configuration logic to configure the interface to use the first transport protocol and to disable the second transport protocol responsive to the Vital Product Data,
- wherein the first transport protocol and the second transport protocol are drawn from the set further including Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) and iWarp.
A non-transitory memory for storing a Vital Product Data, comprising:
- a data structure stored in said non-transitory memory, said data structure including:
- a first storage for a transport protocol to be used by a storage device, the transport protocol drawn from a set including Ethernet, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand, and Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe);
- a second storage for a first data written by the storage device, the first data specifying an identifier for the storage device;
- a third storage for data written by the storage device, the data specifying a reason why the storage device might not operate within a chassis;
- and
- a fourth storage for a transport sub-protocol to be used by the storage device, the transport sub-protocol drawn from a set including Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) and iWarp,
- wherein the storage device includes a Non-Volatile Memory Express over Fabric (NVMeoF) interface.
A method, comprising:
- requesting by a storage device a Vital Product Data from a chassis;
- receiving at the storage device the Vital Product Data from the chassis;
- identifying a first transport protocol to use responsive to the Vital Product Data;
- identifying a transport sub-protocol to use responsive to the Vital Product Data, the transport sub-protocol drawn from a set further including Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) and iWarp;
- configuring a Non-Volatile Memory Express over Fabric (NVMeoF) interface of the storage device to use the first transport protocol and the transport sub-protocol;
- and
- disabling a second transport protocol in the storage device.
