Abstract
A method of displaying a Computer Generated Holographic (CGH) image by a display, including setting pixel values of a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) included in a Head Mounted Display (HMD), producing a interference based holographic image at a first location by projecting coherent light onto the SLM, and re-imaging the holographic image from the first location to form a holographic image in front of an eye of a viewer wearing the HMD. Related apparatus and methods are also described.
Claims18
A method of displaying a Computer Generated Holographic (CGH) image by a display, comprising:
- setting pixel values of a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM);
- imaging said SLM at one location;
- producing an interference based Fourier holographic image at a separate location from said one location, comprising reimaging a first interference based holographic image formed by projecting coherent light onto said SLM;
- controlling a direction of a first direction-adjustable optical mirror at a vicinity of said separate location for directing said image of said SLM from said one location to another location at a pupil of a viewer, to enlarge an observation window from which said CGH may be viewed;
- and
- controlling a second direction-adjustable optical mirror at a vicinity of said one location to control a direction which said viewer views said interference based Fourier holographic image,
- wherein said image of said SLM is re-imaged at the another location at the viewer's pupil;
- and
- wherein the enlarged observation window is projected upon the viewer's pupil in synchrony with a tilt of the first direction-adjustable optical mirror, and a direction of projection controlled by the second direction-adjustable optical mirror.
A system for displaying an interference based holographic image by a display, the system comprising:
- a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM);
- a coherent light source for projecting onto said SLM for producing an image of said SLM at one location and an interference based Fourier holographic image at a separate location;
- an imaging component for re-imaging said image of said SLM from said one location to a viewer's pupil and re-imaging said holographic image from said separate location to form a holographic virtual image in front of an eye of said viewer, and;
- a first direction adjustable optical mirror at said separate location for directing said image of said SLM to a pupil of said eye of said viewer, to enlarge an observation window from which said holographic image may be viewed;
- a second direction-adjustable optical mirror at a vicinity of said one location to control a direction which said viewer views said interference based Fourier holographic image;
- and
- a controller for synchronizing projection of the enlarged observation window upon the viewer's pupil with a tilt of the first direction-adjustable optical mirror and a direction of projection controlled by the second direction-adjustable optical mirror.
