Abstract
Compositions and methods are presented that substantially increase levels of BDNF in blood, and even more pronouncedly exosomal BDNF levels. Suitable compositions include whole coffee fruit extracts and powders that are orally administered at relatively low dosages.
Claims20
A method of improving cognition in a mammal, comprising:
- administering to the mammal a composition that comprises an extract or powder of a whole coffee fruit;
- wherein the extract or powder has a total polyphenol to caffeine ratio of greater than 20:1 with less than 2 wt % caffeine;
- wherein the composition is administered at a dosage to increase the cognition in the mammal.
A method of improving at least one of learning, memory, and alertness in a mammal, comprising:
- administering to the mammal a composition that comprises an extract or powder of a whole coffee fruit;
- wherein the extract or powder contains more than 40 wt % total polyphenols, wherein the total polyphenols contain chlorogenic acids and procyanidins, and wherein the extract or powder contains less than 2 wt % caffeine;
- wherein the composition is administered at a dosage to increase at least one of the learning, the memory, and the alertness.
