Abstract
Provided is an osteotome handpiece that may be driven by compressed gas. In an embodiment, a spherical piston may be movable inside a cylinder having a liner, which may be made of a low-friction material such as a fluoropolymer. The spherical piston may impact a blade holder that transmits force to a blade. A piston return spring may be provided, along with a piston washer to avoid any possible outward deformation of the spring. The blade holder may be retained by a split and threaded retaining collar. Single-stroke or multi-stroke operation may be chosen by the user. The device has long-operating low-maintenance advantages.
Claims21
An osteotome, comprising:
- an osteotome body having a handle region configured to be gripped by a user;
- a piston region within the osteotome body and comprising a cylinder defining a circular bore and an axial length,
- a spherical piston comprising a single spherical body configured for reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder, and wherein the spherical body of the piston is free to rotate about any of its axes during its reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder;
- and
- a blade holder configured for removable engagement of a blade, and wherein the reciprocating translational motion of the spherical piston within the cylinder is operable to transmit force to the blade holder, and
- a cylinder liner within the cylinder, wherein said cylinder liner has an internal surface having a surface roughness of 125 microinches rms or smoother and wherein the spherical piston has a surface roughness of between 5 and 20 microinches rms.
An osteotome, comprising:
- an osteotome body having a handle region configured to be gripped by a user:
- a piston region within the osteotome body and comprising a cylinder defining a circular bore and an axial length,
- a spherical piston comprising a single spherical body configured for reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder, and wherein the spherical body of the piston is free to rotate about any of its axes during its reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder;
- and
- a blade holder configured for removable engagement of a blade, and wherein the reciprocating translational motion of the spherical piston within the cylinder is operable to transmit force to the blade holder, and
- a cylinder liner within the cylinder wherein the cylinder liner has a wall thickness of at least 0.010 inch.
An osteotome, comprising:
- an osteotome body having a handle region configured to be gripped by a user;
- a piston region within the osteotome body and comprising a cylinder defining a circular bore and an axial length,
- a spherical piston comprising a single spherical body configured for reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder, and wherein the spherical body of the piston is free to rotate about any of its axes during its reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder;
- and
- a blade holder configured for removable engagement of a blade, and wherein the reciprocating translational motion of the spherical piston within the cylinder is operable to transmit force to the blade holder:
- a piston return spring located within said cylinder, and
- a piston washer located within the cylinder and between the spherical piston and the piston return spring, wherein the piston washer has a central opening therethrough, the central opening allowing a portion of the spherical piston to protrude therethrough to impact a force-transmitting component of the blade holder, wherein the piston washer comprises a head region and a neck region, the head region being larger in transverse dimension than the neck region, the head region facing the spherical piston, and the neck region being configured to occupy space inside a coil of the piston return spring, and, wherein the neck region has an outside diameter that is greater than an inside diameter of the coil of the piston return spring in an undeformed condition, but can fit inside the coil of the piston return spring when the coil is deformed radially outward, and wherein the coil in radially-outward-deformed condition still has a smaller outside diameter than an outside diameter of the head region.
An osteotome, comprising:
- an osteotome body having a handle region configured to be gripped by a user;
- a piston region within the osteotome body and comprising a cylinder defining a circular bore and an axial length,
- a spherical piston comprising a single spherical body configured for reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder, and wherein the spherical body of the piston is free to rotate about any of its axes during its reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder;
- a blade holder configured for removable engagement of a blade, and wherein the reciprocating translational motion of the spherical piston within the cylinder is operable to transmit force to the blade holder:
- a piston return spring located within said cylinder;
- and
- a piston washer located within the cylinder and between the spherical piston and the piston return spring, wherein the piston washer maintains compression of the piston return spring throughout the reciprocating translational motion of the spherical piston within the cylinder.
An osteotome, comprising:
- an osteotome body having a handle region configured to be gripped by a user;
- a piston region within the osteotome body and comprising a cylinder defining a circular bore and an axial length,
- a spherical piston comprising a single spherical body configured for reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder, and wherein the spherical body of the piston is free to rotate about any of its axes during its reciprocating translational motion within the cylinder;
- and
- a blade holder configured for removable engagement of a blade, and wherein the reciprocating translational motion of the spherical piston within the cylinder is operable to transmit force to the blade holder;
- and
- wherein the spherical piston has a randomly oriented surface roughness.
