Abstract
A dynamic vision sensor (DVS) or change detection sensor reacts to changes in light intensity and in this way monitors how a scene changes. This disclosure covers both single pixel and array architectures. The DVS may contain one pixel or 2-dimensional or 1-dimensional array of pixels. The change of intensities registered by pixels are compared, and pixel addresses where the change is positive or negative are recorded and processed. Analyzing frames based on just three values for pixels, increase, decrease or unchanged, the proposed DVS can process visual information much faster than traditional computer vision systems, which correlate multi-bit color or gray level pixel values between successive frames.

An imaging device including:
- a two dimensional array of pixels, wherein a pixel included in the two dimensional array of pixels includes a photoelectric conversion region and comparison circuitry that outputs an event from a comparison between a first signal based on the photoelectric conversion region and a reference voltage;
- and
- a readout circuit that reads out events from the two dimensional array of pixels and includes a shift register having a first shift register stage and a second shift register stage, wherein the first shift register stage includes a first latch coupled to a first input multiplexer and a first output multiplexer, the second shift register stage includes a second latch coupled to a second input multiplexer and a second output multiplexer, and the first output multiplexer is coupled to the second input multiplexer to provide a first stage output from the first shift register stage to the second shift register stage.
A readout circuit for an array of pixels, each of the pixels including a photosensor that detects incoming light and generates a photoreceptor signal and one or more comparators that compare voltages derived from the photoreceptor signal to assess changes in the photoreceptor signal to detect events, the readout circuit comprising:
- a shift register in which each line of the array has an associated stage of the shift register;
- and
- logic for bypassing stages of the shift register based on the detected events.
