Abstract
Systems and methods are disclosed for retrieving information from legacy storage media with high fidelity and minimal contact. A read sensor with multiple read elements detects electromagnetic fields from tracks on a storage medium. Readings from different elements are combined to generate a composite interpretation, which can be used to, for example, generate digitized waveforms and determine if portions of tracks are damaged.
Claims20
A system for retrieving information stored on a storage medium, the system comprising:
- a read sensor comprising a plurality of read elements configured to detect electromagnetic fields produced by one or more tracks of a storage medium, wherein the electromagnetic fields indicate information stored on the storage medium;
- and
- one or more processors configured to execute a plurality of computer-executable instructions;
- wherein the system is configured to:
- sense a first track of the storage medium using the plurality of read elements;
- obtain, using a first read element of the plurality of read elements, a first reading of electromagnetic fields from the first track;
- obtain, using a second read element of the plurality of read elements, a second reading of the electromagnetic fields from the first track;
- generate a composite interpretation based on both the first reading of the electromagnetic fields from the first track obtained using the first read element and the second reading of the electromagnetic fields from the first track obtained using the second read element;
- and
- determine whether a portion of the first track is damaged based on the composite interpretation.

A method for retrieving information stored on a storage medium, the method comprising:
- positioning a read sensor adjacent to a first track of one or more tracks of the storage medium, wherein the read sensor comprises a plurality of read elements configured to detect electromagnetic fields produced by the one or more tracks of the storage medium, and wherein the electromagnetic fields indicate information stored on the storage medium;
- obtaining, using a first read element of the plurality of read elements, a first reading of electromagnetic fields from the first track;
- obtaining, using a second read element of the plurality of read elements, a second reading of the electromagnetic fields from the first track;
- generating a composite interpretation based on both the first reading of the electromagnetic fields from the first track obtained using the first read element and the second reading of the electromagnetic fields from the first track obtained using the second read element;
- and
- determining whether a portion of the first track is damaged based on the composite interpretation.
