Abstract
Methods and materials to fabricate electrochromic including electrochemical devices are disclosed. In particular, emphasis is placed on the composition, fabrication and incorporation of electrolytic sheets in these devices. Composition, fabrication and incorporation of redox materials and sealants suitable for these devices are also disclosed. Incorporation of EC devices in insulated glass system (IGU) windows is also disclosed.
Claims21
An insulated glass unit (IGU) having a single cavity formed by a gap between a parallel arrangement of (a) an electrochromic (EC) element having a first surface (1) facing an outside of a building and a second surface (2) and (b) a second element that is a transparent element having a first surface (3) and a second surface (4) facing an interior of the building, wherein the second surface (2) and the first surface (3) face said single cavity, and wherein
- (a) said single cavity is filed with a gas,
- (b) surface (4) comprises a first low-e coating thereon and at least one of surfaces (2) and (3) comprises a second low-e coating thereon, and
- (c) the first low-e coating has an emissivity greater than emissivity of the second low-e coating.
An insulated glass unit (IGU) comprising two cavities formed by gaps between parallel arrangements of (a) an electrochromic (EC) element having a first surface (1) facing an outside of a building and a second surface (2) and (b) a second transparent element having a first surface (3) and a second surface (4) and (c) a third transparent element having a first surface (5) and a second surface (6) facing an interior of the building, wherein the surfaces (2) and (3) face a first cavity of the two cavities, and the surfaces (4) and (5) face a second cavity of the two cavities, and wherein
- (a) at least one of said cavities is filled with a gas,
- (b) the surface (6) comprises a first low-e coating thereon, and at least one of the surfaces (2), (3), (4) and (5) comprises an additional low-e coating thereon, and
- (c) the first low-e coating has an emissivity greater than emissivity of the additional low-e coating.
An insulated glass unit (IGU) having a single cavity formed by a gap between a parallel arrangement of (a) an electrochromic (EC) element wherein the EC element is further laminated between a pair of glass substrates having a first surface (1) facing an outside of a building and a second surface (2) and (b) a second element that is a transparent element having a first surface (3) and a second surface (4) facing an interior of the building, wherein the second surface (2) and the first surface (3) face said single cavity, and wherein:
- (a) the cavity is filled with a gas;
- (b) a first low-e coating is on the second surface (2) or the first surface (3) of the IGU;
- and
- (c) the IGU has a ratio of Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), when the EC element is in the clear state to the SHGC when the EC element is in a dark state, of greater than or equal to 1.8, wherein a second low-e coating is on surface (4).
