Abstract
The present invention provides formulations comprising a suspension of nanocellulose (NC) elements and a drying/dispersal additive selected from the group consisting of temperature-responsive polymers, small molecule additives in volatile systems, and blocking agents and methods of preparing such formulations, and further provides NC-containing materials, composite materials and useful articles of manufacture made therefrom.
Claims16
A method of producing a redispersible, dried material comprising nanocellulose elements (NCEs), wherein the material that has a barrier property,
- wherein the barrier-property is selected from the group consisting of an oil and grease resistant (OGR) property, a water resistant (WVR) property, and a combination of both, and
- wherein the NCEs comprise at least one of cellulose nanofibers and cellulose microfibers,
- the method comprising:
- drying a liquid formulation to form the redispersible, dried material comprising the NCEs, wherein the liquid formulation comprises:
- a suspension of NCEs in a liquid medium and a drying/dispersal additive, wherein the drying/dispersal additive is an LCST polymer,
- wherein the drying comprises heating the liquid formulation to a temperature above the transition temperature of the LCST polymer, and wherein the LCST polymer disrupts hydrogen bonding between the NCEs after the heating;
- and
- wherein the LCST polymer imparts the oil and grease resistant property and/or wherein the formulation further comprises a barrier-producing material having the barrier property.
