Abstract
The invention provides an excimer laser system including a means for authenticating laser probes to be used with the excimer laser system via radio-frequency identification techniques.
Claims20
A system for use in treating an eye condition comprising:
- a laser unit comprising:
- electronic tag reader circuitry;
- an excimer laser source;
- and
- a connection port configured to receive, one at a time, a plurality of single-use, disposable laser probes, wherein each probe of the plurality of single-use, disposable laser probes comprises:
- a connector configured to connect to the connection port of the laser unit, and
- electronic tag circuitry;
- at least one processor;
- and
- a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:
- read, using the electronic tag reader circuitry, data from the electronic tag circuitry of a first probe of the plurality of single-use, disposable laser probes while the connector of the first probe is connected to the connection port of the laser unit;
- determine, based on the data from the electronic tag circuitry, that the first probe has been previously used with the laser unit or another laser unit or has not been previously used with the laser unit or another laser unit;
- and
- deny or permit use of the excimer laser source with the first probe based on the determination that the first probe has been previously used with the laser unit or another laser unit or has not been previously used with the laser unit or another laser unit.

- permit or deny use of the excimer laser source with the first probe based on the determination whether the first probe is authorized for use with the excimer laser source.

A method comprising:
- reading, by a processor of a computing device using electronic tag reader circuitry, data from an electronic tag circuitry of a first probe of a plurality of single-use, disposable laser probes while a connector of the first probe is connected to a connection port of a laser unit, wherein:
- the laser unit comprises the electronic tag reader circuitry and an excimer laser source, and
- the connector of each of the plurality of single-use, disposable laser probes is connectable, one at a time, to the connection port of the laser unit;
- determining, by the processor based on the data from the electronic tag circuitry, whether the first probe is authorized for use with the excimer laser source;
- and
- permitting or denying, by the processor, use of the excimer laser source with the first probe based on the determination whether the first probe is authorized for use with the excimer laser source.
