Abstract
Apparatus and techniques described herein can include delivery of a surgical laser beam for tissue excision or to facilitate hemostasis. The surgical laser beam can be generated, for example, using an ultrafast laser source. Such an approach can provide non-invasive treatment in relation to, for example, aerodigestive anatomy, such as for treatment of laryngeal, oropharyngeal, bronchial, and oral cavity tissues. Other generally available laser sources and their associated treatments may present various drawbacks making them less suitable for treatment for laryngeal, pharyngeal or bronchial pathologies, and use of the apparatus and techniques described herein can address such drawbacks.
Claims30
A system for performing surgical laser beam delivery, the system comprising:
- an ultrafast surgical laser source configured to generate a surgical laser beam to modify a volume of tissue by excision or facilitating hemostasis, or both;
- an optical fiber coupled to the ultrafast surgical laser source and configured to deliver light spanning at least a wavelength of the surgical laser beam, including delivering monochromatic coherent pulsed light of the surgical laser beam, to a tissue site;
- and
- a control system communicatively coupled with the ultrafast surgical laser source, the control system configured to selectively enhance hemostasis by adjusting a count of focused pulses of the surgical laser beam striking a region on or within the tissue site as compared to a mode corresponding to excising tissue where hemostasis is not enhanced.
A system for performing depth-selective surgical laser beam delivery, the system comprising:
- an ultrafast surgical laser source configured to generate a surgical laser beam to modify a volume of tissue by excision or facilitating hemostasis, or both;
- an optical system configured to deliver light spanning at least a wavelength of the surgical laser beam, including delivering monochromatic coherent pulsed light of the surgical laser beam generated by the ultrafast surgical laser source, to a tissue site in a depth-selective manner;
- and
- a control system communicatively coupled with the ultrafast surgical laser source, the control system configured to selectively enhance hemostasis by adjusting a count of focused pulses of the surgical laser beam striking a region on or within the tissue site as compared to a mode corresponding to excising tissue where hemostasis is not enhanced.
A machine-implemented method for performing surgical laser beam delivery using a system comprising an ultrafast surgical laser source, an optical fiber coupled to the ultrafast surgical laser source, and a control system coupled to the ultrafast surgical laser source, the machine-implemented method comprising:
- using the ultrafast surgical laser source, generating a surgical laser beam to modify a volume of tissue by excision or facilitating hemostasis, or both, according to corresponding operational modes;
- delivering monochromatic coherent pulsed light of the surgical laser beam to a tissue site using the optical fiber;
- and
- using the control system, adjusting a count of focused pulses of the surgical laser beam striking a region on or within the tissue site to selectively enhance hemostasis as compared to a mode corresponding to excising tissue where hemostasis is not enhanced.
A machine-implemented method for performing depth-selective surgical laser beam delivery using a system comprising an ultrafast surgical laser source, an optical system coupled to the ultrafast surgical laser source, and a control system coupled to the ultrafast surgical laser source, the machine-implemented method comprising:
- using the ultrafast surgical laser source, generating a surgical laser beam to modify a volume of tissue by excision or facilitating hemostasis, or both, according to corresponding operational modes;
- delivering monochromatic coherent pulsed light of the surgical laser beam to a tissue site in a depth selective manner using the optical system;
- and
- using the control system, adjusting a count of focused pulses of the surgical laser beam striking a region on or within the tissue site to selectively enhance hemostasis as compared to a mode corresponding to excising tissue where hemostasis is not enhanced.
