Abstract
A canister vacuum cleaner has a cyclone bin assembly that has a cyclone chamber and a dirt collection chamber. The cyclone chamber has an openable upper end and an openable lower end. The dirt collection chamber is rearward of the cyclone chamber and only partially surrounds the cyclone chamber. The suction motor is rearward of the dirt collection chamber. A pre-motor filter is provided below the cyclone chamber and the cyclone air outlet has an outlet axis that intersects the pre-motor filter. Air travels upwardly from the pre-motor filter to a suction motor inlet.
Claims21
A surface cleaning apparatus having an upper end and a lower end, the surface cleaning unit comprising:
- (a) a body housing a suction motor and a first stage air treatment chamber wherein, when the surface cleaning apparatus is moved in a forward direction, the body has a front end having a front wall and the first stage air treatment chamber has a front side;
- (b) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet port to a clean air outlet with the first stage air treatment chamber and the suction motor positioned in the air flow path, wherein the dirty air inlet port is provided in the front wall, the dirty air inlet port is located at the upper end of the surface cleaning apparatus and the air flow path includes an inlet portion that extends rearwardly from the dirty air inlet to a first stage air treatment chamber air inlet, which is located at the upper end of the first stage air treatment chamber;
- (c) the first stage air treatment chamber is rearward of the suction motor, wherein the air flow path extends rearwardly from the dirty air inlet port to the first stage air treatment chamber at an elevation above the suction motor when the surface cleaning apparatus is oriented with the dirty air inlet port at the upper end of the surface cleaning apparatus;
- (d) a pre-motor filter provided in the air flow path;
- and,
- (e) a dirt collection chamber external to the air treatment chamber and adjacent a sidewall of the first stage air treatment chamber wherein there is an absence of the dirt collection chamber on the front side of the air treatment chamber,
- wherein, when the surface cleaning apparatus is oriented with the dirty air inlet port at the upper end of the surface cleaning apparatus and the apparatus is positioned on a floor, a horizontal plane extends through the dirty air inlet port, the first stage air treatment chamber air inlet and the dirt collection chamber.
A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:
- (a) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet port to a clean air outlet with a first stage air treatment chamber and a suction motor positioned in the air flow path, wherein the dirty air inlet port is provided at a front end of the surface cleaning apparatus;
- (b) a body housing the suction motor and the first stage air treatment chamber wherein, when the surface cleaning apparatus is moved in a forward direction, the body has a front wall and the dirty air inlet port is provided in the front wall and the first stage air treatment chamber has a front side;
- (c) an air treatment bin assembly comprising the first stage air treatment chamber and a dirt collection chamber that is external to the first stage air treatment chamber, the first stage air treatment chamber having an air treatment chamber air inlet which is located at the upper end of the first stage air treatment chamber and an air treatment chamber air outlet, wherein the first stage air treatment chamber is rearward of the suction motor and the air treatment chamber air inlet is in a forward end of the first stage air treatment chamber and wherein there is an absence of the dirt collection chamber on the front side of the air treatment chamber;
- and,
- wherein, in use, a flexible hose is to extendable through the dirty air inlet port and the air treatment chamber air inlet is located at an upper end of the first stage air treatment chamber, and
- wherein, when the surface cleaning apparatus is oriented with the dirty air inlet port at the upper end of the surface cleaning apparatus and the apparatus is positioned on a floor:
- all of an upper end of the first stage air treatment chamber is at an elevation above an upper end of the suction motor, and
- the dirt collection chamber has an upper wall, a lower wall and a sidewall extending between the upper and lower walls and the upper wall of the dirt collection chamber is at an elevation above the upper end of the suction motor and above the air treatment chamber air inlet.
A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:
- (a) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet port to a clean air outlet with a first stage cyclone chamber and a suction motor positioned in the air flow path, wherein the dirty air inlet port is provided at a front end of the surface cleaning apparatus and the air flow path includes an inlet portion that extends rearwardly from the dirty air inlet port;
- (b) a body housing the suction motor has the dirty air inlet port, which is located at an upper end of the body;
- (c) a cyclone bin assembly comprising the first stage cyclone chamber and a dirt collection chamber, the first stage cyclone chamber having an upper end, a lower end, a generally vertical axis of rotation and a front side, the upper end having a cyclone inlet port wherein there is an absence of the dirt collection chamber on the front side of the first stage cyclone chamber;
- (d) a pre-motor filter wherein, when the surface cleaning apparatus is oriented with the dirty air inlet port at the upper end of the body and the apparatus is positioned on a floor, a lower end of the pre-motor filter is at an elevation below the cyclone inlet port of the first stage cyclone chamber;
- and,
- whereby in use, when the surface cleaning apparatus is oriented with the upper end of the body facing upwardly and the apparatus is positioned on a floor, air enters the dirty air inlet port and travels rearwardly from the dirty air inlet port along a horizontal plane to the cyclone inlet port of the first stage cyclone chamber, and the horizontal plane extends through the dirt collection chamber.
