Abstract
In general, in one aspect, embodiments relate to a perforating gun that includes a gun body, a charge tube disposed within the gun body, a plurality of charge cases disposed within the charge tube, and a sacrificial fill material disposed within at least a substantial portion of an inner cavity of the charge tube.
Claims15
A perforating tool assembly comprising:
- a perforating gun comprising:
- a gun body;
- a charge tube disposed within the gun body;
- a flexible sleeve wrapped around the charge tube within the gun body;
- a plurality of charge cases disposed within the charge tube;
- a first region of inner cavity in between the plurality of charge cases;
- a second region of inner cavity in between the gun body and the flexible sleeve;
- a firing head;
- a safety spacer in between the perforating gun and the firing head, wherein the safety spacer is disposed in an uphole direction of the perforating tool assembly relative to the perforating gun;
- and
- a sacrificial fill material disposed within the safety spacer and within a substantial portion of the first region and second region of inner cavity, wherein the sacrificial fill material was fluidically disposed into the inner cavity via a feedthrough.

A method comprising:
- disposing a perforating tool string comprising:
- one or more perforating guns in a wellbore, wherein at least one of the perforating guns comprises:
- a gun body;
- a charge tube disposed within the gun body;
- a flexible sleeve wrapped around the charge tube within the gun body
- a plurality of charge cases disposed within the charge tube;
- a first region of inner cavity in between the plurality of charge cases;
- a second region of inner cavity in between the gun body and the flexible sleeve;
- a firing head;
- a safety spacer in between the perforating gun and the firing head, wherein the safety spacer is disposed in an uphole direction of the perforating tool string relative to the perforating gun, and
- a sacrificial fill material disposed within the safety spacer and within at least a substantial portion of the first region and second of inner cavity;
- detonating the perforating gun to create one or more perforations that extend from the wellbore into a subterranean formation penetrated by the wellbore, wherein the sacrificial fill material absorbs energy from firing to reduce hoop stress on the gun body.
