Abstract
Compositions comprising a condensed mesenchymal cell body and a hydrogel are provided. The compositions may further include drugs or growth factors. The condensed mesenchymal cell body may include a connective tissue cell, or even a progenitor cell capable of producing connective tissue extracellular matrices such collagen and glycosaminoglycan. Also provided are methods of treating connective tissue defects, cartilage injury, and cartilage degradation.
Claims17
An injectable composition for use in a method of treating a connective tissue defect in a patient comprising administering the composition into one of the connective tissue or the area surrounding the connective tissue, the composition comprising:
- a) a condensed mesenchymal cell body (CMB) stored at a temperature of less than about −80° C. for at least one day at an immature state;
- and
- b) a hydrogel,
- wherein the CMB is configured to mature in vivo,
- wherein the injectable composition, including the CMB after thawing the CMB from storage at the immature state, is effective to form cartilage when administered into one of the connective tissue or the area surrounding the connective tissue, and
- wherein a CMB at the immature state is a CMB that has been cultured for fewer than six days prior to storing at the temperature of less than about −80° C.
