Abstract
Projection displays include a highlight projector and a main projector. Highlights projected by the highlight projector boost luminance in highlight areas of a base image projected by the main projector. Various highlight projectors including steerable beams, holographic projectors and spatial light modulators are described.

An optical system, comprising:
- an optical combiner configured to directionally overlap a first light beam and a second light beam and to direct an overlapped light beam through a projection lens, the second light beam having a smaller spot area than the first light beam;
- a spatial light modulator configured to spatially modulate at least the first light beam;
- an optical-beam deflector configured to steer the second light beam relative to the first light beam;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- process image data to determine a base image and a highlight image;
- cause the spatial light modulator to spatially modulate at least the first light beam according to the base image;
- and
- cause the optical-beam deflector to steer the second light beam according to the highlight image.

A method for displaying images, comprising:
- directionally overlapping, with an optical combiner, a first light beam and a second light beam and directing an overlapped light beam through a projection lens, the second light beam having a smaller spot area than the first light beam;
- spatially modulating, with a spatial light modulator, at least the first light beam;
- steering, with an optical-beam deflector, the second light beam relative to the first light beam;
- processing image data, with a controller, to determine a base image and a highlight image;
- controlling the spatial light modulator, with the controller, to spatially modulate at least the first light beam according to the base image;
- and
- controlling the optical-beam deflector, with the controller, to steer the second light beam according to the highlight image.
