Abstract
A method and system for determining a density. The method may comprise disposing a nuclear density tool into a wellbore, performing a spectral deconvolution, determining an energy channel for a first measurement layer, recording a count rate with the gamma detector for the first measurement layer, applying a slope operator to the count rate, and identifying a first density of the first measurement layer. The system may comprise a nuclear density tool that includes a gamma source and a gamma detector configured to record a count rate, wherein the gamma detector and the gamma source are disposed on a longitudinal axis of the nuclear density tool. The system may also comprise an information handling system.
Claims17
A method for determining a density comprising:
- disposing a nuclear density tool into a wellbore, wherein the nuclear density tool is configured to detect a density of an individual annular layer of a plurality of annular layers, and wherein the nuclear density tool comprises:
- a housing having a plurality of cut outs, wherein each cut out of the plurality of cut outs is positioned to focus reflected energy from a corresponding annular layer of the plurality of annular layers;
- a gamma source configured to emit energy;
- and
- a plurality of gamma detectors, wherein each gamma detector and the gamma source are disposed on a longitudinal axis of the nuclear density tool, wherein each of the plurality of gamma detectors is disposed adjacent to at least one cut out of the plurality of cut outs to allow each of the plurality of gamma detectors to detect the reflected energy from the corresponding annular layer of the at least one cut out;
- determining a first energy channel for a first annular layer of the plurality of annular layers, wherein the first annular layer is associated with a first depth within the wellbore, and wherein determining the first energy channel is based, at least in part, on the first depth;
- recording a first count rate with a first one of the plurality of gamma detectors for the first annular layer;
- identifying a first density of the first annular layer based at least on the first count rate utilizing at least a spectral deconvolution;
- determining a second energy channel for a second annular layer of the plurality of annular layers, wherein the second annular layer is associated with a second depth within the wellbore, and wherein determining the second energy channel is based, at least in part, on the second depth;
- recording a second count rate with a second one of the plurality of gamma detectors for the second annular layer;
- and
- identifying a second density of the second annular layer based at least on the second count rate utilizing at least the spectral deconvolution.
A system for determining a density comprising:
- a nuclear density tool configured to detect a density of an individual annular layer of a plurality of annular layers and having a housing comprising a plurality of cut outs, wherein each cut out of the plurality of cut outs is positioned on the housing to focus reflected energy from a corresponding annular layer of the plurality of annular lavers, and wherein the nuclear density tool comprises:
- a gamma source configured to emit energy;
- a plurality of gamma detectors each configured to record a count rate, wherein the plurality of gamma detectors and the gamma source are disposed on a longitudinal axis of the nuclear density tool, wherein each of the plurality of gamma detectors is disposed adjacent to at least one cut out of the plurality of cut outs to allow each of the plurality of gamma detectors to detect the reflected energy from the corresponding annular layer of the at least one cut out;
- and
- an information handling system that:
- determines a first energy channel for a first annular layer of the plurality of annular lavers, wherein the first annular layer is associated with a first depth within the wellbore, and wherein determining the first energy channel is based, at least in part, on the first depth;
- determines a second energy channel for a second annular layer of the plurality of annular lavers, wherein the second annular layer is associated with a second depth within the wellbore, and wherein determining the second energy channel is based, at least in part, on the second depth;
- identifies a first density of the first annular layer based at least on the first energy channel for the first annular layer, the second energy channel for the second annular laver, or both utilizing at least a spectral deconvolution;
- and
- identifies a second density of the second annular layer based at least on the first energy channel for the first annular layer, the second energy channel for the second annular layer, or both utilizing at least a spectral deconvolution.
