Abstract
A wearable device and system has been developed to help users learn the practices of diaphragmatic breathing and breathing patterns to improve running and walking performance. The wearable has a breathing sensor (breathe in-breathe out) and a movement sensor used to identify foot strikes. A processor computes the number of foot strikes occurring while inhaling and the number of foot strikes occurring while exhaling to report breathing patterns as a function of time. The algorithms may be modified to teach breathing patterns to athletes in other sports and deep breathing for numerous movement and minimal movement applications.
Claims14
An apparatus for measuring a breathing pattern of a user, comprising:
- a force sensor;
- a belt coupled to the force sensor wherein the belt is configured to be worn around a circumference of a torso of the user;
- a sensor interface that extends from an inner surface of the force sensor;
- a bumper coupled to the sensor interface, wherein the bumper is configured to be compressed against the force sensor by the torso of the user when the belt is worn and the force sensor is configured to measure pressure increasing forces when the circumference of the torso increases during inhalation and decreasing forces when the circumference of the torso decreases during exhalation;
- a movement accelerometer sensor adapted for detecting step impulses of the user;
- a processor in communication with the force sensor and the movement accelerometer sensor wherein breathing data during breathing cycles is transmitted from the force sensor to the processor and step impulse data is transmitted from the movement accelerometer sensor to the processor and wherein each of the breathing cycles is one inhalation and one exhalation and the breathing pattern is the number of steps taken by the user during the inhalation of the user and the number of steps taken by the user during the exhalation of the user and the processor calculates the breathing pattern by counting the number of step impulses detected by the movement accelerometer sensor while the force sensor measures the increases in force and counting the number of step impulses detected by the movement accelerometer sensor while the force sensor measures the decreases in force and the processor calculates output data for the breathing pattern;
- a printed circuit board containing the movement accelerometer sensor and the processor and the printed circuit board electrically connected to the force sensor;
- and
- an output device that receives and displays the output data for the breathing pattern from the processor.

- a movement gyroscope sensor coupled to the belt and adapted for detecting rotation impulses corresponding to hip rotations of the user;
- a processor in communication with the force sensor and the movement gyroscope sensor wherein breathing data during breathing cycles is transmitted from the force sensor to the processor and hip rotation data is transmitted from the movement gyroscope sensor to the processor and wherein each of the breathing cycles is one inhalation and one exhalation and the breathing pattern is the number of steps taken by the user during the inhalation of the user and the number of steps taken by the user during the exhalation of the user and the processor calculates the breathing pattern by counting the number of rotation impulses while the force sensor measure the pressure increasing forces and counting the number of rotation impulses while the force sensor measures the pressure decreasing forces and the processor calculates output data for the breathing pattern;
- a printed circuit board containing the movement gyroscope sensor and the processor and the printed circuit board electrically connected to the force sensor;
- and
- a visual display in communication with the processor for displaying the breathing pattern.
