Abstract
A network interface adapter can select between a first transport protocol and a second transport protocol to transmit a network packet based on a state of a connection to a destination address for the second transport protocol. The second transport protocol encapsulates the network packet formatted in the first transport protocol. The network interface adapter can automatically use the second transport protocol when the state of the connection is in an active state, and the first transport protocol when the state of the connection is not in the active state.
Claims20
A network interface device comprising:
- a memory storing an address table containing network connectivity state entries, each network connectivity state entry having an address and a state of an enhanced transport protocol network connection to the address;
- and
- processing logic configured to:
- obtain a first set of network packets formatted according to a default transport protocol for transmission to a destination address;
- determine that the state of the enhanced transport protocol network connection to the destination address is in an active state by looking up the destination address in the address table;
- encapsulate each network packet of the first set of network packets to generate a set of encapsulated network packets according to the enhanced transport protocol;
- transmit the set of encapsulated network packets in accordance with the enhanced transport protocol to the destination address;
- determine that the enhanced transport protocol network connection to the destination address is unresponsive;
- update the state of the enhanced transport protocol network connection to the destination address to a probing state;
- obtain a second set of network packets formatted according to the default transport protocol for transmission to the destination address;
- determine that the state of the enhanced transport protocol network connection to the destination address is not in an active state;
- and
- transmit the second set of network packets in accordance with the default transport protocol to the destination address.
A computer-implemented method, comprising:
- obtaining a first network packet for transmission to a destination address;
- determining that a state of a connection to the destination address is in an active state;
- encapsulating the first network packet formatted in a first transport protocol in accordance with a second transport protocol to transmit the first network packet to the destination address;
- obtaining a second network packet for transmission to the destination address;
- determining that the state of the connection to the destination address has transitioned from the active state to a probing state;
- and
- transmitting the second network packet to the destination address using the first transport protocol without encapsulating the second network packet in the second transport protocol.
A network interface device comprising:
- an address table;
- and
- processing logic configured to:
- obtain a first network packet for transmission to a destination address;
- determine that a state of a connection to the destination address is in an active state by looking up the destination address in the address table;
- encapsulate the first network packet formatted in a first transport protocol in accordance with a second transport protocol to transmit the first network packet to the destination address;
- obtain a second network packet for transmission to the destination address;
- determine that the state of the connection to the destination address is in a probing state by looking up the destination address in the address table;
- and
- transmit the second network packet to the destination address using the first transpor protocol in accordance with without encapsulating the second network packet in the second transport protocol.
