Abstract
A technique facilitates control over a downhole well operation. The technique utilizes an electronic control system for controlling actuation of a valve downhole. The valve, in turn, is operated to enable selective control over fluid flows governing the actuation of a downhole tool and/or other downhole operations. In some embodiments, the electronic control system may work in cooperation with a downhole hydraulic system to provide a downhole electro-hydraulically actuated valve system. A monitoring system provides feedback regarding the valve position and/or status of the downhole operation.
Claims8
A method, comprising:
- positioning a valve along a well string to control a flow of fluid to a well tool for operating the well tool;
- providing an actuator module with a motor, a pump connected to the motor, and a motor controller which receives one or more electronic control signals enabling control over the motor and thus control over the valve;
- coupling the actuator module into the well string such that the pump is able to supply actuating fluid to the valve so as to provide controlled shifting of the valve between operational positions according to the one or more electronic control signals;
- receiving, by the motor controller from one or more sensors, one or more indications of an upper hydraulic pressure associated with the actuating fluid supplied to the valve, a lower hydraulic pressure associated with the actuating fluid supplied to the valve, and a temperature associated with the actuating fluid supplied to the valve;
- receiving, by the motor controller from a current sensor, motor current data indicative of current associated with operation of the motor;
- determining, by the motor controller, a valve position associated with the valve based on the upper hydraulic pressure, the lower hydraulic pressure, and the motor current data;
- estimating a temperature of the motor based on the temperature associated with the actuating fluid supplied to the valve and the motor current data;
- adjusting the valve between the operational positions by supplying the actuating fluid to the valve via the pump, wherein the motor is controlled based on the temperature associated with the actuating fluid supplied to the valve;
- controlling the motor based on the estimated temperature of the motor, wherein the motor is turned off when the estimated temperature of the motor exceeds a maximum threshold temperature;
- and
- removing heat from the motor utilizing a motor cooling system, wherein the motor cooling system includes a metal chassis frame that conducts the heat from the motor to the flow of fluid.
