Abstract
Compositions and methods and for enhancing the resistance of plants to plant diseases caused by potyviruses are provided. The compositions comprise nucleic acid molecules encoding resistance (R) gene products and variants thereof and plants, seeds, and plant cells comprising such nucleic acid molecules. The methods for enhancing the resistance of a plant to plant disease caused by a potyvirus comprise introducing a nucleic acid molecule encoding an R gene product into a plant cell. Additionally provided are methods for using the plants in agriculture to limit plant disease.
Claims5
A method for identifying a progeny solanaceous plant comprising an R gene for a plant disease caused by Potato virus Y (PVY) and/or Potato virus A (PVA), the method comprising:
- (a) isolating nucleic acids from a progeny solanaceous plant resulting from the crossing of a first solanaceous plant comprising its genome at least one copy of the R gene with a second solanaceous plant lacking in its genome the R gene;
- (b) detecting in the isolated nucleic acids a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:
- 10;
- and
- (ii) the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:
- 13;
- and
- (c) selecting one or more progeny plants comprising SEQ ID NO:
- 10 or SEQ ID NO:
- 13.
