Abstract
An intervertebral implant has a hollow space formed within the implant and accessible through an elongate opening extending through a recessed portion of the side wall, and the hollow space is shaped to receive an engagement portion of a drive shaft of an insertion tool; and the intervertebral implant includes at least two guiding surfaces facing each other and being configured for sliding engagement by a portion of a sleeve of the insertion tool movably holding the drive shaft.

A monolithic intervertebral implant comprising:
- a top surface;
- a bottom surface, wherein an axis of rotation extends through the top surface and the bottom surface;
- and
- a side wall extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, the side wall having an outer surface that faces radially outwardly away from the axis of rotation;
- wherein an inner surface of the intervertebral implant defines an internal hollow space configured to connect a device to the intervertebral implant for inserting the intervertebral implant into a patient's body, wherein the inner surface is directly engageable with the connected device to restrict separation of the connected device from the intervertebral implant;
- wherein the hollow space is accessible through an opening that extends through the side wall, wherein a first portion of the outer surface of the side wall that defines the opening is planar and a second portion of the outer surface that defines the opening and directly connected to the planar first portion is curved as the outer surface extends circumferentially around the axis of rotation between a first end of the opening and an opposite second end of the opening;
- and
- wherein one of the first or second portions of the outer surface defines a center of the opening measured circumferentially between the first and second ends of the opening, while the other one of the first or second portions extends continuously circumferentially from a position closer to the center of the opening than to the first end of the opening to a position closer to the first end of the opening than to the center of the opening.
A monolithic intervertebral implant comprising:
- a top surface;
- a bottom surface, wherein an axis of rotation extends through the top surface and the bottom surface;
- and
- a side wall extending between the top surface and the bottom surface;
- wherein an inner surface of the intervertebral implant defines an internal hollow space configured to connect a device to the intervertebral implant for inserting the intervertebral implant into a patient's body, the inner surface being configured to facilitate pivoting of the intervertebral implant relative to the connected device around the axis of rotation;
- and
- wherein the hollow space is accessible by the connected device through an opening that extends through the side wall, wherein a height of the hollow space measured in a direction of the axis of rotation between two portions of the inner surface defining the hollow space that at least partially face one another is greater than a maximum height of the opening measured in the direction of the axis of rotation, wherein an end of the hollow space that is closer to the bottom surface than to the top surface is visible through a hole that extends through the top surface, and wherein a size of the hole is smaller than a size of the opening.
A system comprising an intervertebral implant and a device to insert the intervertebral implant into a patient's body;
- the intervertebral implant comprising a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein a first axis of rotation extends through the top surface and the bottom surface, and a side wall extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, and wherein an inner surface of the intervertebral implant defines an internal hollow space configured to connect the device to the intervertebral implant in an unthreaded manner, the hollow space being accessible through an opening that extends through the side wall, the opening having a height measured in a direction of the axis of rotation and a width measured circumferentially around the axis of rotation that is greater than the height;
- the device comprising a drive shaft having a longitudinal axis, and an engagement portion at one end of the drive shaft that is insertable into the hollow space of the intervertebral implant;
- wherein when the engagement portion of the device is in the hollow space, the engagement portion directly engages the inner surface of the intervertebral implant that defines the hollow space, with the direct engagement being configured to facilitate both rotation of the device relative to the intervertebral implant around the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft and pivoting of the intervertebral implant relative to the device around the axis of rotation, and further being configured to restrict separation of the device from the intervertebral implant at least two different angular positions between the intervertebral implant and the device around the axis of rotation.
A system comprising a monolithic intervertebral implant and a device to insert the intervertebral implant into a patient's body;
- the intervertebral implant comprising a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein a first axis of rotation extends through the top surface and the bottom surface, and a side wall extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, and wherein an inner surface of the intervertebral implant defines an internal hollow space configured to connect the device to the intervertebral implant, the hollow space being accessible through an opening that extends through the side wall, the opening having a height measured in a direction of the axis of rotation and a width measured circumferentially around the axis of rotation that is greater than the height;
- the device comprising a drive shaft having a longitudinal axis, and an engagement portion at one end of the drive shaft that is insertable into the hollow space of the intervertebral implant;
- wherein when the engagement portion of the device is in the hollow space, the engagement portion directly engages the inner surface of the intervertebral implant that defines the hollow space, with the direct engagement being configured to facilitate both rotation of the device relative to the intervertebral implant around the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft and pivoting of the intervertebral implant relative to the device around the axis of rotation, and further being configured to restrict separation of the device from the intervertebral implant at at least two different angular positions between the intervertebral implant and the device around the axis of rotation.
