Network architecture using indexing and tapping modules

An optical network comprising:

• a tap module including a tapped line and a plurality of pass-through lines accessible at an output of the tap module, the tapped line being optically tapped at an optical tap within the tap module to split some of the optical signals carried over the tapped line to a tap output line, the pass-through lines bypassing the optical tap so that no optical signals are split from any of the pass-through lines within the tap module;
• and
• an indexing module optically coupled to the tap module, the indexing module including a pass-through line, a drop line, and an indexed line, the pass-through line being optically coupled to the tapped line of the tap module, and the indexed line being optically coupled to one of the pass-through lines of the tap module.
