Abstract
A lightweight, pocket-sized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that can be held in an outstretched hand by a user for take-off and landing of the UAV. The UAV comprises a semi-toroidal or a substantially toroidal hollow body that defines a duct. The UAV further comprises a motor for rotating a fan that directs air into and out of the duct enabling UAV to take flight. The UAV comprises a flight-control system that comprises at least two flight control surfaces that can alter the directed air as it flows through the duct for controlling the roll and pitch and optionally the yaw of the UAV during flight. The flight control system may be controlled by a microprocessor controller. The UAV further comprises a payload, with at least a wireless transmitter and receiver unit.
Claims23
A method for controlling an aerial vehicle, the method comprising:
- generating an airflow through a duct of the aerial vehicle comprising a body defining the duct;
- moving the aerial vehicle along a flight path by controlling the airflow through the duct of the aerial vehicle;
- and
- controlling at least one parameter of the flight path by modifying the airflow through the duct of the aerial vehicle at least partially, the airflow through the duct of the aerial vehicle modified at least partially by controlling one or more flight control surfaces positioned within the duct, the one or more flight control surfaces moveable between a retracted position within the body and a protruded position within the duct.
An aerial vehicle comprising:
- a body comprising a first end and a second end;
- a duct extending from the first end to the second end;
- at least one fan generating an airflow through the duct;
- one or more flight control surfaces positioned within the duct;
- and
- a flight control system configured to control at least one parameter of a flight path of the aerial vehicle by controlling at least one of the one or more flight control surfaces, the one or more flight control surfaces configured to modify the airflow through the duct at least partially by moving the one or more flight control surfaces between a retracted position within the body and a protruded position within the duct.
