A device for securing sliding windows and doors, the device comprising:
- a telescoping bar having a first end and a second end with an adjustable length therebetween, the telescoping bar being formed by a plurality of bars having a tubular shape that slidably fit one inside another, the tubular shape being configured such that a rotation of one of the plurality of bars around a lengthwise axis of the telescoping bar rotates each of the plurality of bars in the telescoping bar around the lengthwise axis;
- a first plate having a base with a back surface for mounting to a first external surface and a front surface for attachment to the first end of the telescoping bar;
- a second plate having a base with a back surface for mounting to a second external surface and a front surface for attachment to the second end of the telescoping bar;
- means for respectively attaching the first end and the second end of the telescoping bar to the first plate and the second plate in one of a separable orientation and an inseparable orientation according to an angle of rotation of the telescoping bar around the lengthwise axis relative to the first plate and the second plate;
- wherein, when the first end and the second end are respectively attached to the first plate and the second plate, the means allows rotation of the telescoping bar around the lengthwise axis relative to the first plate and the second plate;
- when the telescoping bar is rotated around the lengthwise axis to a first angle corresponding to the separable orientation, the means allows the first end and the second end of the telescoping bar to be respectively separated from the first plate and the second plate by a lateral movement of the telescoping bar away from the first plate and the second plate, the lateral movement being perpendicular to the lengthwise axis;
- and, when the telescoping bar is rotated around the lengthwise axis to a second angle corresponding to the inseparable orientation, the means prevents the first end and the second end of the telescoping bar from being separated from the first plate and the second plate;
- and
- a lock movable between a locked position and an unlocked position;
- wherein, in the unlocked position, the lock does not interfere with rotation of the telescoping bar around the lengthwise axis relative to the first plate;
- and, in the locked position, the lock physically prevents rotation of the telescoping bar around the lengthwise axis relative to the first plate.
