Abstract
A device and methods for intervertebral spinal fusion of adjacent intervertebral bodies. An intervertebral spacer is positioned within a narrow disc space between adjacent intervertebral bodies of a patient. The spacer is arranged with upper and lower guides. The guides are adapted to simultaneously guide the deployment of upper and lower anchors of an anchoring device into their respective intervertebral bodies. The spacer is also adapted to lock the upper and lower anchors to the spacer in the deployed position.
Claims12
An intervertebral spacer system comprising:
- a spacer comprising a superior surface, an inferior surface, a first side, a second side, a distal end, and a proximal end, a slot in the proximal portion and defined by the first and second sides, an upwardly curved recess that extends from the proximal end up through the superior surface, and a downwardly curved recess that extends from the proximal end down through the inferior surface;
- an upper anchor configured to pass through the upwardly curved recess;
- a lower anchor configured to pass through the downwardly curved recess;
- a carrier configured to receive the upper anchor and the lower anchor and translate through the slot of the spacer;
- a rotator configured to attach to the carrier,
- wherein when the carrier and rotator are translated through the slot, the upper anchor is guided through the upwardly curved recess and the lower anchor is guided through the downwardly curved recess until the upper anchor and lower anchor are in a fully deployed configuration,
- wherein the carrier comprises an upper retainer configured to receive and attach to the upper anchor and a lower retainer configured to receive and attach to the lower anchor.
A method of implanting an interbody spacer comprising:
- inserting a spacer into an intervertebral disc space, the spacer comprising a superior surface, an inferior surface, a first side, a second side, a distal portion, and a proximal portion, a slot in the proximal portion and defined by the first and second sides, an upwardly curved recess that extends from the proximal end up through the superior surface, and a downwardly curved recess that extends from the proximal end down through the inferior surface;
- translating a carrier holding an upper anchor, a lower anchor, and a rotator through the slot of the spacer such that the upper anchor passes through the upwardly curved recess and the lower anchor passes through the downwardly curved recess;
- and
- rotating the rotator to secure the rotator to the spacer and lock the upper anchor and the lower anchor in a fully deployed configuration.
An intervertebral spacer system comprising:
- a spacer comprising a superior surface, an inferior surface, a first side, a second side, a distal end, and a proximal end, a slot in the proximal portion and defined by the first and second sides, an upwardly curved recess that extends from the proximal end up through the superior surface, and a downwardly curved recess that extends from the proximal end down through the inferior surface;
- an upper anchor configured to pass through the upwardly curved recess;
- a lower anchor configured to pass through the downwardly curved recess;
- a carrier configured to receive the upper anchor and the lower anchor and translate through the slot of the spacer;
- a rotator configured to attach to the carrier,
- wherein when the carrier and rotator are translated through the slot, the upper anchor is guided through the upwardly curved recess and the lower anchor is guided through the downwardly curved recess until the upper anchor and lower anchor are in a fully deployed configuration,
- wherein when the upper anchor and lower anchor are in a fully deployed configuration, the rotator is configured to rotate such that the upper wing and lower wing are rotated into locking slots of the spacer, securing the rotator to the spacer and locking the upper anchor and the lower anchor in the fully deployed configuration.
