System and method of taking and collecting tissue cores for treatment

A method for tissue sample retrieval and preservation, the method comprising:

• obtaining a tissue removal device configured with an outer cannula having an outer cannula opening that defines a cutting edge for severing tissue, and with an inner cannula disposed in the outer cannula and reciprocable within the outer cannula, the inner cannula having a cutting edge at a distal end that cooperates with the cutting edge of the outer cannula opening to sever tissue samples;
• connecting a tissue collector to the inner cannula;
• connecting a vacuum generator to the tissue collector;
• obtaining a tissue preservation system comprising:
• a base member defined by side wall members connected to a bottom surface and having an open top opposite the bottom surface, wherein the side wall members and bottom surface collectively form a reservoir section that is configured to receive a cooling medium, and
• a temperature control sleeve fitted within one of the side wall members and disposed at least partially within the base member, wherein the temperature control sleeve defines a tissue collector chamber configured to receive the tissue collector to control the temperature of tissue samples disposed within the tissue collector, the temperature control sleeve defining a slit extending from the open top to the bottom surface of the base member;
• inserting the tissue collector into the tissue collector chamber such that a vacuum line coupled to the tissue collector is received in the slit;
• and
• transporting, with the vacuum generator, tissue samples severed by the tissue removal device to the tissue collector through the inner cannula.
