Disclosed herein are populations of microvesicles containing or otherwise associated with viral particles, methods of producing these purified populations, and methods of using these purified populations in a variety of diagnostic, therapeutic and/or prophylactic indications.

A method of delivering an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector particle to a target cell comprising, contacting the target cell with a purified population of eukaryotic lipid membrane microvesicles associated with one or more of the AAV vector particles shed by a producer cell engineered to comprise the one or more AAV vector particles.
