Printing apparatus

A printing apparatus comprising:

• a roll paper compartment having a placement surface on which an outer surface of a roll paper is placed and accommodating the roll paper;
• a printing section performing printing on a recording paper pulled out from the roll paper accommodated in the roll paper compartment;
• a projecting/retracting portion configured to project from or retract into the placement surface;
• a detection section detecting projection and retraction of the projecting/retracting portion and having an optical sensor that includes a light emitting element and a light receiving element;
• a rotating lever rotatably provided and having the projecting/retracting portion and a blocking portion configured to block a space between the light emitting element and the light receiving element;
• and
• a suppressor configured to project from or retract into the placement surface, and the suppressor protruding from the placement surface at an amount of protrusion smaller than that of the projecting/retracting portion, on a side to which the recording paper is pulled out with respect to the roll paper, when a diameter of the roll paper is smaller than a predetermined diameter;
• wherein
• the projecting/retracting portion is pressed by the roll paper of which the outer surface is placed on the placement surface and retracts into the placement surface when the diameter of the roll paper is larger than the predetermined diameter,
• the projecting/retracting portion is released from the pressure by the roll paper and projects from the placement surface when the diameter of the roll paper is smaller than the predetermined diameter, and the blocking portion
• switches between a state in which the space between the light emitting element and the light receiving element is blocked and a state in which the space between the light emitting element and the light receiving element is open, depending on the projection and retraction of the projecting/retracting portion.
