Abstract
Methods related generally to the removal of atmospheric pollutants from the gas phase, are provided. The methods involve contacting a first stream comprising NO and/or NO2 with a second stream comprising (ClO2)0 to provide a third stream comprising NO and NO2 at a molar ratio of about 1:1; and contacting the third stream with a fourth stream comprising an aqueous metal hydroxide (MOH) solution to convert NO and NO2 to MNO2.
Claims14
A system for treating a gas stream comprising:
- a reactor comprising a gas stream inlet for introducing the gas stream into the reactor, and an oxidant inlet for introducing an oxidant into the reactor;
- a device disposed inside the reactor positioned and/or configured to contact the gas stream and/or oxidant passing through the reactor and produce a turbulent flow condition within the reactor;
- and
- an oxidant generator comprising an oxidant outlet connected with the reactor, wherein the oxidant generator comprises an electrochemical device;
- wherein the gas stream and oxidant are mixed together during passage within the reactor to cause a component in the gas stream to undergo reaction to produce a different component, compound, molecule, or atom.

A system for treating a gas stream comprising NOx and/or SOx gases comprising;
- a reaction vessel comprising a gas stream inlet for introducing the gas stream into the reaction vessel, and an oxidant inlet for introducing ClO2 into the reaction vessel;
- and
- an oxidant generator comprising an oxidant outlet connected with the reaction vessel, wherein the oxidant generator comprises an electrochemical device;
- wherein the gas stream and oxidant combine within the reaction vessel and undergo reaction to convert at least one NOx or SOx gases in the gas stream to at least one other component, compound, molecule, or atom.
