Abstract
A method and compositions of matter for treating or preventing an auto-immune disorder or immune response in a patient, that includes providing a therapeutic dose to the patient of a substituted indole compound having at least one substitution, wherein the substituted indole compound has only one thiol group, and wherein the ring the thiol group is attached to only contains one N or O atom.

A method for treating an auto-immune disorder or immune response in a patient that is modulated by the expression of IDO1, comprising the steps of:
- upregulating the expression of IDO1 by providing a therapeutic dose to the patient of a substituted indole compound having at least one substitution, wherein the substituted indole compound has only one thiol group, and wherein the ring the thiol group is attached to only contains one N or O atom,
- wherein the substituted indole compound comprises a compound having the chemical structure (I)
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof,
- wherein R1 is H, a halogen, or CN;
- R2 is H, a halogen, NH2, or CN;
- R3 is H or CN;
- R4 is H or a thiol protecting group;
- and at least one of R1, R2, or R3 is a halogen, NH2, or CN.
