Abstract
The present disclosure relates to an automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) system using gravity to deliver fluid from one or more source dialysate bags to the patient as the destination. The present disclosure further relates to a drain container arrangement for receiving and storing spent dialysis effluent from a patient, wherein the drain containers include self-opening valves activated when the containers are arranged together, and the valves are self-sealing when the containers are disconnected from one another.
Claims15
A peritoneal dialysis assembly comprising:
- a drain container support;
- a primary drain container positioned on the drain container support, the primary drain container having an outflow valve located on a bottom side of the primary drain container;
- at least one secondary drain container positioned in close proximity to the primary drain container on the drain container support, the at least one secondary drain container having an inlet valve located on a top side of the secondary drain container;
- and,
- wherein the outflow valve of the primary drain container is configured for engaging with the inlet valve of the at least one secondary drain container forming a continuous open fluid pathway between the primary drain container and the secondary drain container;
- wherein the primary drain container is separable from the secondary drain container;
- wherein the outflow valve of the primary drain container is configured to close when the primary drain container is separated from the secondary drain container;
- and,
- wherein the inlet valve of the secondary drain container is configured to close when the secondary drain container is separated from the primary drain container.
A peritoneal dialysis assembly comprising a primary drain container having an outflow valve fluidly connected to a lateral side of the primary drain container;
- at least one secondary drain container separably positioned in close proximity to the primary drain container, the at least one secondary drain container having an inlet valve fluidly connected to a lateral side of the secondary drain container;
- and,
- wherein the outflow valve of the primary drain container is configured for engaging with the inlet valve of the at least one secondary drain container forming a continuous open fluid pathway between the primary drain container and the secondary drain container;
- wherein the outflow valve of the primary drain container is configured to close when the primary drain container is separated from the secondary drain container;
- and,
- wherein the inlet valve of the secondary drain container is configured to close when the secondary drain container is separated from the primary drain container.
A method for receiving and maintaining a spent effluent fluid from a patient using a peritoneal dialysis assembly, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a primary drain container having an outflow valve;
- positioning a secondary drain container having an inlet valve near the primary drain container;
- connecting the outflow valve of the primary drain container with the inlet valve of the secondary drain container and opening each valve;
- creating a continuous fluid pathway between the primary container and the secondary container through the open outflow valve and inlet valve;
- flowing spent effluent fluid initially into the primary drain container to a predetermined fluid level;
- releasing the spent effluent fluid from the primary drain container into the secondary drain container after reaching the predetermined fluid level of spent effluent fluid in the primary drain container thereby distributing the spent effluent between primary drain container and secondary drain container;
- disconnecting the outflow valve from the inlet valve;
- and,
- removing the primary drain container from the secondary drain container.
