Abstract
In an embodiment, voltage fault detection is performed for alternating current (AC) multi-phase power systems based on a reconstructed or virtual voltage signal derived from voltage samples captured in a shortened sample window to reduce fault detection time. The embodiment of the present disclosure constructs the virtual voltage signal (emulating the root mean square (RMS) voltage of any of the phases) from the voltage samples captured from signals of the multi-phase power system. The embodiment of the present disclosure employs a shortened sample window of T/2/N (N is the number of phases ≥3) to capture the voltage samples, thereby reducing measurement and fault detection delay. The virtual voltage signal is used determine root mean square (RMS) voltage for voltage fault detection.

A method of detecting voltage faults comprising:
- sampling, via a controller of a power system, a plurality of voltage signals of the power system each having a different phase in a sample window to capture signal portions, wherein each signal portion is associated with an angle range;
- converting, via the controller, each signal portion in the sample window with negative values and the associated angle range to a portion of a voltage signal producing that signal portion having corresponding positive values;
- generating, via the controller, a virtual voltage signal by combining the signal portions with positive values based on associated angle ranges;
- determining, via the controller, a voltage value based on the virtual voltage signal;
- and
- detecting, via the controller, a voltage fault in the power system based on the voltage value.
A system for detecting voltage faults comprising:
- a controller configured to:
- sample a plurality of voltage signals each having a different phase in a sample window to capture signal portions, wherein each signal portion is associated with an angle range;
- convert each signal portion in the sample window with negative values and the associated angle range to a portion of a voltage signal producing that signal portion having corresponding positive values;
- generate a virtual voltage signal by combining the signal portions with positive values based on associated angle ranges;
- determine a voltage value based on the virtual voltage signal;
- and
- detect a voltage fault based on the voltage value.
