Abstract
A gear having volume expansion for cavitation reduction in a gear pump mesh. The gear has a gear tooth profile; a body; a plurality of involute gear teeth extending radially outward from the body and including first and second neighboring gear teeth each having a respective tip and a root, the first and second neighboring gear teeth defining a space between them; and a root pocket formed directly into the roots of the gear teeth and in the space between the gear teeth, providing an increased gear root volume and adding trapped fluid compliance while leaving unaltered the gear tooth profile. Also disclosed is a gear pump including the gear.
Claims22
A gear having a gear tooth profile and comprising:
- a body;
- a plurality of involute gear teeth extending radially outward from the body, wherein each gear tooth of the plurality of involute gear teeth has a respective tip and a root, the gear tooth and a neighboring gear tooth defining a space between them;
- and
- a respective root pocket formed directly into the roots of the gear teeth and in the space between the respective gear tooth and the neighboring gear tooth, providing an increased gear root volume and adding trapped fluid compliance while leaving unaltered the gear tooth profile, and
- a beam being disposed in and spanning across a width of each root pocket, the beam extending into the depth of the root pocket.
A gear pump comprising:
- a first gear having (i) a gear tooth profile, (ii) a first body, (iii) a first plurality of involute gear teeth extending radially outward from the first body and, each first gear tooth of the first plurality of involute gear teeth including a respective tip and a root, the first gear tooth and a neighboring first gear tooth defining a space between them, (iv) a respective root pocket formed directly into the roots of the first plurality of involute gear teeth and in the space between the first gear tooth and the neighboring first gear tooth, providing an increased gear root volume and adding trapped fluid compliance while leaving unaltered the gear tooth profile, and (v) a beam being disposed in and spanning across a width of each root pocket, the beam extending into the depth of the root pocket;
- a second gear being configured to mesh with the first gear in a mesh zone that defines a gear mesh volume that is increased by the respective root pocket and having a second body and a second plurality of involute gear teeth extending radially outward from the second body;
- a first gear bearing and a second gear bearing configured to position the first gear and the second gear along a bearing center line, wherein the root pocket does not extend into either the first or the second gear bearing;
- and
- a housing having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet and in which are disposed the first gear, the second gear, first gear bearing, and the second gear bearing.
A gear having a gear tooth profile and comprising:
- a body;
- a plurality of involute gear teeth extending radially outward from the body;
- wherein each gear tooth of the plurality of involute gear teeth has a respective tip and a root, the gear tooth and a neighboring gear tooth defining a space between them;
- and
- a respective root pocket formed directly into the roots of the gear teeth and in the space between the respective gear tooth and the neighboring gear tooth, providing an increased gear root volume and adding trapped fluid compliance while leaving unaltered the gear tooth profile, and
- a beam being disposed in and spanning across a width of each root pocket, the beam extending into the depth of the root pocket,
- wherein the beam splits the root pocket into a first pocket portion and a second pocket portion, and
- wherein the first pocket portion and the second pocket portion are in fluid communication.
