Abstract
The present invention relates to an inulin composition comprising GFn- and Fm-compounds, in particular for decreasing the risk of sinusitis, preferably for use in the prophylaxis of sinusitis in a subject in need thereof and food, beverages and pharmaceutical compositions containing the inulin composition.

A method for decreasing the risk of sinusitis in a subject that is a child three to six years of age, attending a daycare facility, and is at risk of developing sinusitis, comprising administering to the subject an inulin composition,
- wherein 25 to 40 wt.-% (dry matter, based on total mass) of the inulin composition is GFn-(GlucoseFructosen-) and Fm-(Fructosem-) compounds having a DP≥11 (degree of polymerization), and 15 to 30 wt.-% (dry matter, based on total mass) of the inulin composition is Fm compounds with m=2 to 9,
- wherein the DPAV (average degree of polymerization) of the inulin composition is 6.5 to 9 and
- wherein the inulin composition is administered at a daily dose of from 5 to 15 (dry matter) grams for 1 to 8 months wherein administration of the composition decreases the risk of sinusitis by at least 75%.
A method for prophylactically treating sinusitis in a subject that is a child three to six years of age, attending a daycare facility, and is at risk of developing sinusitis, comprising administering to the subject an inulin composition, wherein 25 to 40 wt.-% (dry matter, based on total mass) of the inulin composition is GFn-(GlucoseFructosen-) and Fm-(Fructosem-) compounds having a DP≥11 (degree of polymerization), and 15 to 30 wt.-% (dry matter, based on total mass) of the inulin composition is Fm compounds with m=2 to 9,
