Abstract
Crumb rubber obtained from recycled tires is subjected to an interlinked substitution process. The process utilizes a reactive component that interferes with sulfur bonds. The resulting treated rubber exhibits properties similar to those of the virgin composite rubber structure prior to being granulated, and is suitable for use in fabricating new tires, engineered rubber articles, and asphalt rubber for use in waterproofing and paving applications.
Claims20
An interlinked substituted rubber material, comprising a rubber derived from end-of-life tires and further comprising at least one of carbon black particles and graphene particles, wherein a degree of interlinked substitution in the interlinked substituted rubber material is such that a portion of sulfur bonds present in the end-of-life tires are maintained intact while a remaining sulfur bonds are subjected to interlinked substitution, wherein the interlinked substituted rubber material is capable of vulcanization, wherein a portion of rigid sulfidic linkages therein are each tethered at an original allylic carbocation and unbound at an original methyl carbocation.
