Abstract
In various embodiments, superconducting wires incorporate diffusion barriers composed of Nb alloys or Nb—Ta alloys that resist internal diffusion and provide superior mechanical strength to the wires.
Claims20
A superconducting wire comprising:
- a wire matrix comprising Cu;
- a plurality of composite filaments;
- extending through an axial dimension of the wire, a stabilizing element comprising at least one of Nb, Ta, or W;
- and
- disposed between the wire matrix and the composite filaments, a diffusion barrier comprising at least one of Nb, Ta, or W,
- wherein:
- each composite filament comprises (i) a plurality of monofilaments and (ii) a cladding comprising Cu surrounding the plurality of monofilaments,
- each monofilament comprises a core comprising Nb and, surrounding the core, a cladding comprising Cu, and
- the diffusion barrier extends through the axial dimension of the wire.
